Very interesting interview. I suggest checking out the podcast. I don't want to be a grassy knoll theorist but Flip is very, very engaged on the Gopher program. I know he has always loved the Gophs but he was very interesting. He made mention that it is easier for a NBA coach to go college than vice versa because he says NBA coaches are used to doing basketball 24-7 and nothing but. Said he's going out to watch Vaughn play Benilde and he also offered some analysis on the MSU game.

It all means nothing but I have a feeling he would do almost anything to support a winning program here. I have an insane thought: I don't think it is beyond impossible that Flip would be willing to support Tubby for a few years as an offensive coach and recruiter in return for a deal to coach the Gophs in two years. Let's say Tubby is tired but still wants to go out a winner. Perfect scenario for both is that he goes out and recruits the team he wants, while helping Tubby and has them in here the day he takes over. Vaughn and Jones would be an awful interesting pair to start with. He said that the Gophs need a go to guy and that Mbakwe would have been that guy so he was also very supportive of Tubby.

Blast away. :)

As soon as he was fired at Washington I wanted him as a Gophers assistant. I think there is a decent chance of that (no inside knowledge) but my thought was, someone was going to have to leave when Jimmy came on board. Why not do the same for Flip? I think it makes a ton of sense. And he is basically working as a free recruiter right now. I'd agree that I think he comes on board next year.

You think he will come on board, or you think he should?

In some ways this makes a lot of sense. Tubby and Flip for a few years, then just Flip for about 5 years, then Saul comes back (by this point he is a successful mid-major coach). If Saul doesn't have the credentials bring in J.B. or an end of career Monson (just kidding- kind of).

It makes a lot of sense to me but I am drinking wine and waiting for my wife to come home from work. Ego will stop this from happening but if Tubby is tiring, the co-coach is an interesting option. Give them 2.5 millions and split it. It is still a lot of money.

Gotta appreciate the honesty.:)

Not sure why Saul or JB should be in any discussion at this point.

I gotta believe that flip coming on as tubby's assistant will never happen. Fun to think about though.

Not sure if Flip is willing to settle up with Wash to forego the full term of his paid NBA leave. If so, then he truly does love the Golden Gophers. It would definitely help the U to have a former NBA coach to assist with teaching and recruiting as a selling point with recruits about preparedness for an NBA dream.

They are not nor should they be. I was just poorly articulating an argument that tubby may agree with. Bringing in Flip as a co-coach extends Tubby's coaching tree to a point where Saul may be a viable candidate (especially if he leaves and succeeds as a head coach at a lower level elsewhere).

Yes, I know, a ton of assumptions.

If he were working a non-paid position would he actually need to forego his term?

Sure is a pleasant thought. I thought I read on here somewhere that Flip goes to the practices or maybe was at a couple. I tell you, if I was Tubby I'd be picking Flip's brain for ideas any chance I could, especially if he's so accessible like he seems to be.

No doubt that Flip is in tune with the Gopher program. When the Gophers were looking for a coach after firing Monson, I had a long talk with a friend of mine that happens to be a former teammate of Flip's on the Gophers. He said if the timing had been better, not the middle of the NBA season, Flip would have been seriously interested in the Gopher job. He still has a lot of passion for the Gopher program.

First of all I'm not saying fire Tubby and hire Flip. However it is refreshing to hear Flip talk BB both on the NBA and college level. It seems he is very much in tune with BOTH levels and totally knows the local BB scene. Flip was a freshman at the U when I was there and you could not ask for a more down to earth guy than him. If Tubby where to leave I think Flip could give the U the best chance to keep our local talent home because he wants to be here and has coached at the highest level. It was interesting to hear him to talk about why whiner izzo is successful.

The cool part of being a paid or volunteer coach for Tubby starting this spring would be the chance to see if he has the passion for recruiting. If not then he never has to become the head coach. He can attempt to load up his own future team with talent.

Correct if I am wrong but a lot recruiting is going to games and talking to the kids about BB and the U. I believe he goes to a ton of games now and has no trouble in talking to kids. I do believe his passion for both is a selling point.

Tubby goes to local games. Izzo goes to games all over the country. Izzo is tireless recruiter. Tubby is a recruiter of convenience. Flip would be an immediate upgrade in recruiting. Flip would be a better HC than Tubby.

bga1, would you happen to have a link for the podcast? I looked through that KFAN website and didn't come up with one.

Oy, look at the Gopher roster. Tubby recruits nationally.

Anyway, this idea, Flip and JB Bickerstaff as coaches was my idea first. I know Q Lewis wants a spot on the staff too.

Izzo calls up a friend of the program and gets an immediate ride.

Tubby has to call up Orbitz and Travelocity on his laptop to compare prices.

Yup.

You guys need to read about Izzo. He doesn't win because supporters give him rides. He has supporters that give him rides because of what he has done. Not the other way around. If he had to drive to MN to see Tyus he would. His work ethic is second to none and especially not second to Tubby Smith.
