Fleck and Virginia Tech? Says small chance... but worth noting

I’ll give some credit to the author for (1) recognizing the odds are small and (2) giving a fairly balanced, accurate analysis of PJ and the program.

That said… unless VT rolled out the Brink’s trucks, there’s zero reason for PJ to make that move. Minnesota is a better program than VT over the past decade and is in a richer, better conference. He’d be going to the Nebraska of the ACC.

Well it’s only better because of Fleck

Wasn't it known that Fleck at W Michigan looking to capitalize on his success had "a list" of programs and that one of the criteria was being in a large market?

VT, like their former hated rival WV, are the antithesis of that.

The price to hire Fleck seems like it would be a deterrent for most programs. His resume probably isn’t what the elite programs that can afford him are looking for at this point.

VPI would be a hugh step down from Minny; Located in a small town and participates in a much weaker conference.

They are more like the Purdue of the ACC

They don't have anywhere near Nebraska's tradition or resources.

Like Purdue, they are an engineering school in the middle of nowhere. They were both good in the early 2000s because they had a run of a few good QBs, including two who were indirectly traded for each other in the 2001 Draft - Mike Vick and Drew Brees.

I think Wisconsin is the B1G comp. No real winning tradition until the 90s, consistently good for three decades, and now floundering again.

Beamer was a good coach. His DC for a lot of his success was a guy who played for him and was a VT lifer. (Still there in admin now)

They almost reached the pinnacle in 1999 with Vick, lost the natty game to FSU.

The Big East was easy. One or two big games a year. Then play in a bowl. ACC was harder but still had a relatively easy division.

The Gophers under Kill and Mason were not "mediocre."
Mason was 32-48 in the Big Ten
Kill was 15-25 in the Big Ten

What is your definition of "mediocre?"

Kill one winning season, one .500 season, three years of 2-6
Mason 2 winning seasons, 2 .500 seasons, 6 losing seasons...

Yes. I remember reading that as well.

Programs he would consider that are above or at minnesotas stature that fit that criteria are:
UCLA (dumpster fire)
Washington
Colorado (I know it isn’t in Denver but I’ll count it)
Arizona state
Georgia tech
Boston college
Northwestern
Maryland

Obviously there are blue blood programs that would be hard to say know to. But if he is leaving for a non blue blood these would be the logical
Places to me.

It also could be different now that his kids are older. I think they wanted to be in the city for family reasons. Easier to be normal as a college football coach in the city than a small town.

In the old big east, Fleck’s Minnesota team would be a perennial top 20 team as they went 8-4 or better every year and usually 9-3 or better.

Schedule an easy non conference schedule and go 3-2 against:
Pitt
West Virginia
Boston College
Syracuse
Rutgers
And you are 10-2

Virginia techs 1999 schedule
James Madison (FCS)
UAB 5-6
Clemson 6-6
@Virginia 7-5
@Rutgers 1-10
Syracuse 7-5
@ Pitt 5-6
@ West Virginia 4-7
Miami 9-4
@ Temple 2-9
Boston College 8-4

Fleck probably has 1 team that would go 11-0 vs that schedule
3 more teams that go 9-2 or better.
Every team except year 0 goes at least 8-3
