DT Nyles Pinckney (from Clemson)

He was a starter, though not a star, for the powerhouse Tigers.

DT Val Martin (North Carolina State)

Another ACC veteran, he played more than 500 career snaps for the Wolfpack.

LB Jack Gibbens (Abilene Christian)

Could stabilize the linebacker corps, but he'll be making a jump from the FCS.

WR Dylan Wright (Texas A&M)

The 6-3 sophomore has plenty of raw skill but is short on experience.

K Matthew Trickett (Kent State)

The former MAC special teams player of the year could fill a critical void.

Go Gophers!!

I haven't heard much hype surrounding Val Martin. I wonder if he'll make an impact.

I think they like Val Martin as a DT in passing downs...has some twitch.

Gibbens is likely #1 linebacker.

Pinckney may be All Big.

Wright may end up starting, starring.

Trickett has been really accurate 45 and in.

Also brought in another kicker from Temple and a punter from UL-Monroe.

And an OL who started at Utah State for three years.

Completely agree with the analysis you provided. The transfer from Utah: Utah State OL - Karter Shaw hasn't shined as the coaching staff had hoped. It is said he needs some work on his strength....so much so, he won't be in the rotation for this year. I don't think he made the 3-deep yet, so it's a work in progress.

O-line loaded with 6th year, 5th year, 4th year guys, four-star talent, NFL prospects...but pretty sure he'd be in the three-deep as we only have 18 scholarship olinemen and three are true frosh

I thought the plan was for Shaw to get a lot of snaps at C in 2022--heir apparent. But in the 8/23 presser, Fleck was talking about how well Nathan Boe has played. If Shaw makes some S&C progress, 2022 looks good with two capable Cs (if JMS goes to the NFL). PJ likes competition at each position; forges the steel.

Wright was a straight up baller in high school…and I thought he was closer to 6’5” to 6’3”. I’m glad he wised up and got the heck out of College Station so I can root for him now.

I would be flat out shocked if all 5 of these players were not significant contributors this year. Perhaps Martin not QUITE as much, but Pinckney, Gibbens, Wright and Trickett will be major contributors. I think Gibbens is going to be fantastic in particular.

If anything he'll add a lot of experience and depth. He might not be a huge difference maker but he'll see the field plenty I'm sure.
Then why should he see the field? He was brought in TO be a difference maker. When he gets that first strip sack or TD, glory be the Gophers.

See above.

I don't know if I totally agree with this. You could make an argument that he was primarily brought in for depth, at a position at which there was a considerable amount of concern over depth prior to the transfers of Martin and Pinckney. He may turn out to be a difference-maker, but he doesn't have to be in order to be an integral piece for this season.

He's going to play some valuable minutes, regardless of how much of an impact he makes

Pinckney and Carter should be the starters in the middle. Assume Martin will have a significant rotational role, like MDT.

Because anyone who knows anything about modern football knows you don't just play the same 4 guys at DL the entire game.
they'll rotate, definitely want to keep DL fresh for late game situations

Not saying you are wrong, but hard to believe an all conference honorable mention from the mountain west would need that much work. But maybe that speaks to the size difference in the Big Ten.

OL, on the other hand, you usually don't rotate guys in. Just hasn't been a thing.

But with Schlueter and Big Dan as bookends .... if Andries, Olson, JMS, and Dunlap are all healthy and ready to go .... I can't see how you don't find some way to get them all in the game.

Andries is the first to go in to replace either tackle.

Agree with what you're saying here. I was surprised to learn that as well; but I heard it from a good source who would be in the know.
