Gophers 29th in total defense (better against passing); 110th in total offense (Maryland was 120th and last).

Would be better if the offense could pick up a first down and stay on the field every now and then.

Gophers 29th in total defense (better against passing);...

Misleading stat above...

When Nebraska is up 38-0 in the 3rd quarter...when Iowa is up 24-0 at the half...when Wisconsin is up 24-6 in the 3rd quarter...when Northwestern is up 21-10 at the half...when Michigan is up 28-10 and MSU is up 26-10 in the 2nd half...and when all of these opponents see that the Gophers offense can't/won't move the ball, then these opposing offenses shut it down, thereby making the Gophers defense look better (artificially) than they really are.

It's still a lot better than last year.

So how does a team finish with a lower ranking if not by playing worse?

That was one of the most idiotic things I've read. Obviously teams are going to try to hold on to the ball and not try to run up the score.. Also every one of those teams has a pretty good rushing offense so that allows them to put away teams that they're up on..
