Gophers had 50 points in the paint, Badgers had 49 points total.

Go Gophers!!

I don't care what the sports is, that's a beautiful score.

INDIANAPOLIS — Kiara Buford scored 19 points and Minnesota shot 50 percent in an 81-49 victory over Wisconsin in a Big Ten first-round game Thursday.

The eighth-seeded Golden Gophers will face top-seeded and ninth-ranked Penn State in the quarterfinals Friday.

Big Ten Freshman of the Year Rachel Banham had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for Minnesota (15-16). Kionna Kellogg added 11 points and Micaella Riche 10 as the Gophers made 32 of 64 shots and 5 of 9 from 3-point range.

Taylor Wurtz scored 13 points to pace the ninth-seeded Badgers (9-20), who were outrebounded 51-24.

The Gophers reeled off a 14-0 first-half run, holding Wisconsin scoreless for 5:10 and turning a 15-14 deficit into a 28-15 lead.

Minnesota extended the edge to 39-23 at intermission and was ahead by 38 late in the game.

The Gophers had lost six straight games to Wisconsin.

Could be considered the best game for the Gophers this year. The posts were scoring and that was a big help.

It was fun, but not sure about the best game because of the competition. Wins over Ohio St. and Nebraska were more impressive IMO. Just an unbelievably inconsistent team. Hopefully, they keep it going tomorrow against Penn St. who just hammered them.

This is what I love to see. A team who, without a miracle, is out of contention for any hopes at postseason, comes out against a rival and ends their season by an embarrassing score. Great work Gophs, I hope you can get it done against PSU tomorrow.

INDIANAPOLIS - Kiara Buford scored 19 points and Minnesota shot 50 percent in an 81-49 victory over Wisconsin in a Big Ten tournament first-round game Thursday.

The eighth-seeded Golden Gophers will face top-seeded and ninth-ranked Penn State in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. today. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

Rachel Banham had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for Minnesota (15-16). Kionna Kellogg added 11 points and Micaella Riche 10 as the Gophers made 32 of 64 shots and 5 of 9 from three-point range.

"It was a great win as a collective group," Gophers coach Pam Borton said. "I thought we had great balance offensively. When we can get our post players to score, we usually win and win pretty big."

Minnesota's 32-point margin of victory is the third largest in Big Ten tournament history and the biggest since Michigan routed Northwestern 72-39 in 2000. It was the Gophers' first Big Ten tourney win since they beat Northwestern in the 2007 opener.

With 1,461 career points as a Gopher, Buford surpassed former teammate Emily Fox for the No. 7 spot on Minnesota's all-time scoring register.

"We had nothing to lose going into this game," Buford said. "I had a lot of goals at the beginning of the season, and this is one of them that I wanted to accomplish. I wanted to make sure before I went out as a senior that we had a good game here."

"I thought Kiara really set the tone for our team with her defense and her attacking,"

Borton said. "Our team fed off of her tonight."
Taylor Wurtz scored 13 points to pace the ninth-seeded Badgers (9-20), who were outrebounded 51-24."

I saw her play a few HS games. I at one time thought she was going to be a Gopher.

I don't care what sport it is in, anytime you humiliate Becky it feels good. Let's hope the pucksters put to Becky tonight. As far as the ladies go they lost to Penn State in the last couple of minutes at home, so who knows.

+1,000,000

I can't find the attendance in the box score-- does anyone have an estimate? I flipped past the game once last night and on TV it looked like the attendance might break 200, but only if they counted legs.
