Fall Camp '14: Defensive Line Preview
Trio of Amaefula, Botticelli and Cockran has started a combined 67 career games, played in 102 combined games

It’s Aug. 13 and you have already read this storyline a hundred times: how will Minnesota replace Third Team AP All-American and second-round NFL draft pick Ra’Shede Hageman on the defensive line?

It’s a fair question, but it is almost important to remember what they Gophers do have instead of what they don’t.

Yes, the freakish Hageman is gone. He is now toiling with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons as a rookie – and Minnesota lost another great stalwart in Roland Johnson as well – but the defensive line should be just fine in 2014.

The Gophers return three starters on the line in seniors Michael Amaefula and Cameron Botticelli redshirt junior Theiren Cockran. The trio has combined to start 67 career games and has played in 102 games. Amaefula and Second Team All-Big Ten selection Cockran (led team with 7.5 sacks) patrol the edges, while the 6-5, 290-pound Botticelli helps clog the middle.

Amaefula, Botticelli and Cockran enter 2014 as the most experienced Gophers, but that doesn’t mean that others have not been tested. Minnesota has freely rotated members of its defensive line in and out during the Jerry Kill era and one would expect that to continue in 2014.

The Ekpe brothers – junior Scott and sophomore Hendrick – should see extensive action this year. Minnesota’s last two Outstanding Defensive Freshman of the Year award winners have played in 36 career games, with Scott seeing action in all 26 games of his career. Scott is now 6-4 and 293 pounds and could replace Hageman next to Botticelli on the line, while Hendrick, at 6-5, 251 pounds, can help provide some pressure off the edge.

Redshirt senior Ben Perry and junior Alex Keith also have a ton of game experience. Perry started 12 games as a freshman in 2011 and has played in 34 games, notching 32 tackles. Conversely, Keith has seen action in 24 games and her 38 tackles on his resume, including 8.5 tackles-for-loss and 3.5 sacks.

Looking to make more of an impact this year will be redshirt senior Harold Legania, redshirt junior Robert Ndondo-Lay, redshirt sophomore Yoshoub Timms and redshirt freshman Demaris Peppers.

Legania and Timms have seen brief action, as Legania has played in four career games, while Timms has played in six. Ndondo-Lay looks the part at 6-5 and 250 pounds and could see his first action for the Gophers this year. The DeLaSalle High School product attended Winona State in 2012 before transferring to Minnesota. Peppers is from Memphis, Tenn., and was redshirted last season.

The Gophers also welcome four freshmen to the defensive line this year in Julien Kafo, Gary Moore, Steven Richardson and Andrew Stelter.

Coach Kill has gone on the record in saying that Richardson will play this year, calling him an “unmovable object.” The true freshman, who won a state title in Illinois at Mt. Carmel High School, has leverage on his side at 6-0 and 291 pounds. He had 34 tackles-for-loss and 17 sacks as a senior in high school.

Kafo, who is from Canada and speaks four languages, attended Vanier College last season and recorded 11 tackles-for-loss and five sacks. Stelter won a Minnesota state championship at Owatonna High School after leading his team to a perfect 13-0 record. Individually, he was named First Team All-State after recording 58 tackles as a senior. He set a school record with 12 sacks as a junior.

Moore projects to be another fine defensive tackle for the Gophers as he stands at 6-4 and 300 pounds. The Mobile, Ala., native made 57 tackles last year in school, which included 18 solo stops.

Now you know who is going to replace Ra’Shede Hageman (and Roland Johnson) on Minnesota’s defensive line.

Fall Camp '14: Running Backs Preview

Fall Camp '14: Running Backs Preview
David Cobb leads a group that includes three backs who have started games.
Aug. 15, 2014

It's no secret that the Gophers like to run the football. They rushed for 2,538 yards (37th in the nation) last season and scampered for 23 touchdowns on the ground. Minnesota's rushing attempts outnumbered passing attempts by more than 300. Head coach Jerry Kill's team will strive to improve its aerial attack in 2014, but the running game will remain at the core of the Gophers' identity.

David Cobb leads a trio of experienced running backs. Cobb started the last six games of 2013, and Donnell Kirkwood and Rodrick Williams Jr. both started games last season as well. Cobb holds the No. 1 spot right now, but the other two continue to compete for carries.

Cobb only ran the ball 11 times before his breakout junior year. He was not in the two-deeps during fall camp, but went on to rush 237 times for 1,202 yards and seven touchdowns. He tallied six 100-yard rushing games and was the first Gopher to rush for more than 1,000 yards since 2006. The team's 2013 offensive MVP, Cobb was 262 yards away from the Gophers' season rushing record, during a season in which he did not start until the eighth game. He will aim even higher going in as the No. 1 back this year.

Before Cobb, Kirkwood was the most recent Gopher to reach 900 rushing yards. He racked up 926 yards in 2012 and started the first game of the 2013 season. Kirkwood suffered an ankle injury in the season opener against UNLV and saw limited action the rest of the season. He is feeling healthy and ready for his senior year after an offseason surgery.

Williams started the six games following Kirkwood's injury. He racked up a career-high 148 yards at New Mexico State, and did not have a negative rush during his sophomore season. At 5-foot-11, 247 pounds, Williams is the Gophers' biggest running back. In the past he tried to "just run everybody over," but he has said during camp that he is a more patient runner now than he was in his first two years.

Senior Cole Banham is the Gophers' other returner with game experience. He played in two games last season.

One name that has generated interest since his arrival is Berkley Edwards. The redshirt freshman will make his collegiate debut this fall after being injured early last fall and redshirting his true freshman season. Edwards, a Michigan sprinting champion in high school, is one of the fastest players on the team. He expects catching passes to be one of his major roles this season.

Rodney Smith, Josh Parks and Jeff Jones are newcomers in Minnesota's stable of running backs. Smith and Parks have both been suited up during fall camp. Smith, a Georgia native, rushed for 2,201 yards as a senior in high school. Parks rushed for 1,202 yards last year for Chisago Lakes. Jones, another Minnesota native, was rated as the top recruit in the state and was named the MVP of the Under Armour All-America Game.

While the Gophers have a marquee running back in David Cobb, those below him on the depth chart will be ready to step up if needed. Minnesota's depth and experience at the position will keep the "ground and pound" style of play going strong in 2014.
