Per Greg:

Smith's take: FACT. I was very prepared to go with fiction here, but I’m not sure people outside of Minneapolis realize the Gophers have won at least nine games in three of the last four seasons. That solid foundation - plus this class - could have P. J. Fleck’s crew competing for a Big Ten championship.

There are several players to like in this class, starting with offensive lineman Nathan Roy. The Wisconsin native was a huge pickup for the team. One sleeper to watch in the class is running back Ohifame Ijeboi out of Philly. His recruitment was starting to take off when the Gophers got him on campus for an official visit and won his pledge.

The other thing that would give me hope is that Minnesota has done such a terrific job so far this cycle keeping top talent home. I don’t think this class finishes the rankings in the top 10 where they sit now, but we are going to look back at this class as a gigantic one for the Gophers.

Williams' take: FACT. Minnesota's 2024 class currently ranks 10th in the country with 23 total commitments. That's a great trend for a program that wants to remain on its upward trend.

This recruiting cycle, Fleck and his staff have done an exceptional job of landing the best talent in-state, which includes defensive end Jide Abasiri (No. 1 in-state), defensive tackle Mo Saine (No.3 in-state), and safety Koi Perich (No. 5 in-state) to go along with the likes of cornerback Simon Seidl, wide receiver Jalen Smith, linebacker Mason Carrier and linebacker Sam Macy.

Two top in-state targets remain uncommitted in defensive end Wyatt Gilmoreand offensive lineman Emerson Mandell. If the Gophers can land one of the two, that's big. If they land both, that's icing on the cake.

Minnesota's other big wins include Roy, three-star defensive tackle Riley Sunram and three-star tight end Julian Johnson.

Go Gophers!!

Every BIG team starts the season "competing" for the BIG championship but only two actually play in the championship game.
That is a goal that has eluded PJ since he came to MN and if he does it this year given the schedule, it would indeed be a stellar accomplishment.
Starting in 2024 it will be more difficult for any of the former West teams to make the BIG championship game if you are looking at recruiting rankings as the marker that guarantees your spot in that game.
MI, OSU, and PSU have always ranked far ahead of the former West teams.

Without divisions and just going by records since the divisions started (along with pac 12 tiebreakers) the following teams would’ve appeared in the championship game since the inception of the game if it was “top 2”

Ohio state - 10
Michigan state - 3
Wisconsin - 3
Michigan - 3
Penn state - 2 (one of these is 2019 even though gophers beat them and Wisconsin beat gophers)
Nebraska - 1
Iowa - 1
Indiana - 1

In 2-3 years half of these recruits will have used the transfer portal. Impossible to rate recruiting classes anymore.
This. Also, we're 5 months out from signing day in the NIL era. There will be changes.

Some of them we will think are good, some not so good.

We will be right about some of those and wrong about others.

The Athletic just published what happened to the 2019 Top100 recruits.
About half are with the same team, 35 were drafted, 7 signed but were not drafted, and the rest played for different and some multiple teams.
With the NIL and the ease of transferring the numbers leaving for other teams will probably increase making the exaggerated psychic and emotional responses to any years recruiting a waste of emotions.

People keep saying NIL is completely changing football. But the bigger change is the one free transfer. If people had to sit out a year there would be much more stability.
