Saturday’s game at Minnesota (2-0) will be televised nationally by ESPNU as one of the first games of the day with a 10 a.m. start and the score will flash across the bottom of TV screens throughout the day on national networks as Big Ten games scroll by.

“It’s good for our program,” English said. “We need to be playing these teams, and the better we want to be, the better we’re going to get. This should be week in and week out.”

Maybe so.

For now, though, it gives the Rams a chance to see how they stack up against a decent team from one of the top football conferences in the country.

“I think when your players see that they can go play these teams in these other conferences ... and go play or do the things they’re supposed to do, I think helps them confidence-wise,” English said.

The Rams used a respectable performance in 2013 at then-No. 1 Alabama to build the confidence they needed to win six of their next nine games to close out the regular season before downing a Pac-12 foe, Washington State, in the New Mexico Bowl. An early win at Atlantic Coast Conference member Boston College in 2014 sparked a 10-3 season, just the fifth 10-win season in school history.

CSU’s only win in six tries against a Big Ten school came in the 1998 season opener at Michigan State, where the 15th-ranked Rams beat the No. 23 Spartans 23-16. CSU finished the year 8-4.

The Rams are 0-3 all-time against Minnesota, including a 23-20 loss in overtime last year in Fort Collins. Minnesota’s defense is the better than any the Rams have faced the past two seasons, offensive coordinator Will Friend said, and their mammoth offensive line, with starters who weigh in at an average of 6-foot-5 and 322 pounds, is the biggest CSU is likely to see this year.

“We’ve got to come close to playing a complete game this week,” Bobo said. “It’s going to be a big, big challenge for us.”

Last year we were lucky to come out with a win. KJ Maye made a great catch for a TD on one play and CSU was playing without their NFL draft pick WR. They're younger this year and you could see that in the beating they took from Colorado. Should be a Gopher win, but look at the Georgia State game against Becky. They came in 0-3. That's what makes college football the great game that it is.
