Listened to Judd and Mackey this morning talk about the hire. Mackey is on board that they had no choice to hire based on AD situation. Judd thinks it's a give up hire that could have waited to the end of the season. I agree with Mackey.

Many don't like the fact that Claeys has never been 100% a HC. I ask how many coaches who have been fired as a HC, get hired at Power five schools? How many new hires have HC experience? How many Mid-Major coaches were replacing a "hired-up" coach and handed a quality program?

Claeys with Kill and staff have been handed mess after mess and been successful.

Here is some cherry picking of experience before first HC job.

Matt Campbell 1 year as OC experience.
PJ Fleck no HC experience or coordinator
Tom Herman 10 years OC.
Rod Carey 1 year OC.
Fuente. 3 years co-OC.
Gus Malzahn. 1 yr HC, 6 OC
Tracy Claeys. 20+ as DC at three levels. Assistant HC two years.
Bob Stoops. 8 years DC, AHC-DC 3 years.
Brett Bielema. 4 years DC.
Pat Fitzgerald, no HC or Coordinator experience
James Franklin 5 yrs. OC AHC

With all the other openings right now, the situation at hand, the players backing and
the continuity of the staff, it was a no-doubt hire.

On top of that....I think Claeys just might be a better HC than Kill. I love Kill, but I think
Claeys might have more of 'it'. I dunno....we'll see. Just have that feeling.

I listened as well - it was pretty entertaining.
I also agree with Mackey. Timing is an issue with the recruits, and even more so, with the number of HC jobs open right now, there will be a lot of options and movement in the FBS this off-season.
Stability is important and with everything in the athletic department in flux right now, it was the right thing to do.

This isn't a whole lot different from Pitt hiring Pat Narduzzi last year. They are 6-3 now.

TC is now gonna go up against a whole lotta alpha shark head coaches in the B1G though... he has a lot of work to do to sustain success over a longer period of time.

Agreed on all counts.

Well, the Michigan game was the offense's best game of the season and the Ohio State game was the defense's best game (considering the level of the competition of course) so he's off to a good start. Now, if we can just combine both performances in a single game, I'll be sold.

How is the U hiring TC like Pitt hiring Narduzzi? I'm having a hard time following that one...

Sorry, I should have clarified more. I meant to point out that it is similar in that they are both long time coordinators for a well-respected head coach, getting hired for the first time at a power five school despite having no prior head coaching experience.

Pitt did the same thing hiring Chryst. There's enough examples either way to say it's a crap-shoot whether you hire as a promotion or go with someone with HC experience. I think we'll be just fine with TC.

Next year could be special with the experience we have now through all these injuries, and a more favorable B1G schedule.
