With all the PSU/Paterno, marching band, and random wisky hating threads, let talk expectations for this game.

I honestly was wary of hoping for much at first, but then saw that wisky hadn't rolled us at home since 83', some bad teams have kept pace with wisky even in some good years for them.

I'm not a believer in wisky's D, it's fine, but certainly not better than MSU, and maybe not better than iowee.

Their O is formidable, passing and running. Buying a free agent all american QB will help a team like wisconsin do that. I fully expect them to return to the pack in the future post Russell Wilson and have a neutered passing attack like they usually do. But we're talking this year.

Our Gophers are confident, but we're still young in general up front and thin in general everywhere, bad combos even for a normal wisky attack which basically is a herd of sconnie big boys pulling and crashing against the defense like a buffet line dash in green bay. It's going to take a few things going our way to overcome and give ourselves a chance. There is however a chance.

I remember 07' when the seniors on a 1-10 team showed up and gave themselves up on every play, Decker torched Ikawhosit, Weber slung it around, most memorable play however was Justin Valentine getting 3 yards after contact with the wisky defenders, a miss-used senior dragging linebackers for all he could gain. We lost in OT, a tough game that we quite frankly couldn't win with the lack of speed on our defense that year, nonetheless the worst team in gopher history this side of Joe Salem came within 7 on the backs of seniors who gave their all.
But no axe.

08' we caught BB off guard like a simple math question, we had them confused, beaten down, took a big lead ON THE ROAD at Madison, snow fell, emotions ran high. Our youth gave us energy, freshmen receivers took up Decker's slack, plugged the wisky running game early but also did us in with boneheaded personal foul penalties by Kirksey, and key fumbles by Stoudemire. We faltered and lost a heartbreaker in the snow.
No axe again.

09' In our new stadium, we took a 3rd lead into halftime in 3 years, Decker torching the secondary, this time we could taste it, I remember Cooper and Theret slamming into John Clay and the wisky guards to no avail, 200 lbs against 270, 215 against 330, the tackles were made but our rush defense wasn't beefy enough, we even stripped Zach Brown and took the ball back for 6. We weren't there yet, our players simply didn't have the big ten bodies to smash and penetrate their running game. We just fell short again, no axe.

10' was a mess from the home opener on, painful and exasperating, we suddenly found many of the Big Ten bodies we had counted on were gone, and their replacements were even greener than the 08' squad. We gave it a go, 14-9 at the half, but after Aaron Hill stripped a wisky offender and the refs whistled it dead the little wind we had went out of our sails, BB ran it up like his bathroom scale and went for 2 on Brewster.
No axe, no hope, or is there?

In 2008 the Iowa Hawkeye beat our Gophers at home on senior night 55-0, as bad of a game as I can recall. Ryan Wynn being tossed aside as Mitch King and company slaughtered Weber, and Shaun Greene bounced off gopher defenders like a JUCO dropout pinball. I stayed until the final second thinking we may not beat iowa for 10 years. They were stacked, young, and Ferentz was building an NFL squad in Iowa city. BUT.

Just 2 seasons later, on the heels of another bad season with our head coach fired, our program in the grip of a milquetoast horror with directors cup standings taped to the empty seats of TCF Bank in only it's second year.
We entered a rivalry game again with the same Iowa city squad that walloped us in 08, just all growed up, and overcame.
We won.
For no reason whatsoever but pride and the blood and sweat(and tears) the seniors sacrificed on the field that day, we won.

I know, wisky is no iowee, they demolished Kill's former team NIU, they are 2 plays away from a nation...HA I can't even write it...HAHAHA, sorry. Where was I oh yeah wisky.
This team is better than the 07 squad, and the remaining young kids that faltered late in the cold of Camp Randall in 08 are still here, our coaching staff will have a plan, our fans will be loud, our opponents' fans very drunk.

When this team hits the field and the first tackle is made on either side, we will see if pride will be fought for, if blood will be spilt, if indeed scores can be thrown out and history matters ONLY in this game, maybe, just maybe, we have a chance, and the shocked face of BB wobbling through a sea of Maroon and gold students will only be a consolation to the prize.
An Axe.

Go get it back boys!

We didn't get to OT. Howell muffed that punt in the 4th, and our late drive to tie the game ended in a interception. Doesn't change the overall point, but figured I'd put on my dpdoll hat for a minute. :)

We always seem to show up against them at home and I think the badgers of 2011 are not as good as 2010. There's a chance, but it's slim. I was hoping it would be dip into the 30s for the game, so we could see how Wilson reacts to playing in the cold. There's still hope for 40s. To win this game we'll have to go for broke and score, score, score. Hopefully Gray has some magic left.

I'm in agreement that to stay in the game we're going to have to match their scoring. By that I mean our offense is going to have to play out of their minds. Their fatty fat fat rb's will run. If we can keep up the scoring, maybe get a break or 2, couple turnovers...

Great post. I can't see it being a blowout, just because we do play them close at home. But I just don't think we have enough unless we get some breaks/turnovers and start out well like the MSU game. Gotta punch them in the mouth.

Will be interesting to see what Kill comes up with for the team before the Wisconsin game. Love what he did before the Iowa game.

I will say, getting that axe back (whenever it does happen) is going to be a helluva celebration.

If Wisconsin is hot on offense early and/or our defense doesn't come out strong at the gun, I fear a first quarter like Michigan and Purdue and that kind of onslaught is hard to come back from.

IMO, our hopes for this game lie entirely in the first quarter not being disasterous. After 15 minutes of play, I'll exhale.

I don't think that the Gophers need to try and turn it into a track meet. If this was me, I'd steal a page from Tim Brewster (yes that Tim Brewster) and devise a gameplan that was similar to MTSU to open up 2010. Control the clock. Establish a running game, keep the ball out of Wisconsin's hands and keep your defense on the sideline as much as possible.

Ole, very good sir. I am looking forward to the game saturday as well. And like "Go Gophers Rah", I think it will fall on how we play in that 1st quarter on wether it will be close or not. Let us hang around, and we have as good a chance as any other team.

This and I think our defense will have to create a few turnovers for us to even have a chance.

Win then. Otherwise your HATE didn't produce anything except HATE. The fans in the student section won't be back for the Illinois game because it will most likely be colder and IF the HATE they talked about couldn't produce a win against wisky...they will lose interest really fast.

So, HATE all you want, but without a win, all of your hate will have a bunch of over-the-hill and completely over-rated hate mongers and tough talkers just "talking hate and blowing smoke..."

And, that game against Illinois will be pretty poorly attended by that anemic looking little student section area in the bowl end zone. Your "hate" plan is NOT filling the student section. Are you sure that the students understand just who they are supposed to hate? And, even IF they are quick enough on the up-take, they may think that they are only supposed to hate wisky and won't realize that they are supposed to be there to watch they game against Illinois even though they are supposed to hate iowa and wisky.

A student section based upon hate for a trophy game participant really isn't much to brag about when they don't really show up for the other Big Ten games against non-trophy game teams.

So, you hate-freaks had better insure that all of your hating brings home a win on Saturday.

I want the Gophers to win Saturday because it will be a Big Ten game. I want to beat all Big Ten teams that the Gophers play. I WANT the Gophers to be a competetive program within the Big Ten Conference.

I HATE it when the Gophers don't win enough Big Ten games to be competetive within the Big Ten Conference.

We will see how much hate you big talkers can generate on Saturday. You had better bring enough of your hate to intimidate the wisky players and their fans. Can you bring it ole? Can you big haters get it done? Can you turn out enough students in the student section to not humili-HATE yourselves in front of all of us?

And...will your "Hate campaign..." continue on into the final game of the season aainst Illinois?

To do HATE well, you have to also have a really strong team that produces wins on the field. That way, the reputation of you team and their actions on the field speak MUCH more loudly than all the HATE you can generate. Rather than having a few people on a message board preaching "big-time-HATE..." it is much better to have a team that puts the fear of God into every team that lines up against them...border battle or no border battle...trophy game opponent or no trophy game opponent. HATE is never enough. HATE is entirely over-rated, over-hyped and over-practiced.

Promises, promises, promises...you promise hate...all we really need is a win and I would just LOVE to beat wisky on Saturday. It is NOT about hating...it is ALL about picking up a win against bucky badger...and I would just LOVE to have the Gophers do just that. So, I think this game is much more about LOVING than it is about hating.

Nice post. Nice passion. Football is a great game because the same game can be analyzed by two people in a completely different manner. That is what makes it fun.

It is also the first coming back to the pack post of the since 2009, which is cool. Have not seen that in a while.

Anyone that does not think that anything can happen on Saturday was certainly not at the '93 game. Or the '88 game for that matter. In '88, I did not think there was a Division 3 team that the Badgers could beat that year. Somehow they beat Minnesota 14-7 for their only win of the year. When we ran on the field to celebrate the victory, the Badgers looked at us like we were crazy. You don't often get to run on the field for a 1-10 team.

Security was not as tight at that time.
