Per Jon K:
When the Minnesota Timberwolves’ season ended in the Western Conference finals for the second straight year, Tim Connelly had a decision to make.
His contract had an opt-out clause for this summer, meaning he could have exercised the option and become a free agent, making himself perhaps the most sought-after lead executive on the market. Or he could have opted out and negotiated a new contract with the Timberwolves, getting a raise after helping build a team that has reached heights this franchise has never before seen.
Instead, he is opting in on the original five-year deal he signed in 2022. That means he is under contract for two more seasons with the Wolves, team sources told The Athletic.
Connelly is often nonchalant when talking about himself, from job performance to contract status. But there was some intrigue about his future with Minnesota, given his ability to shake loose of the contract he signed with the Wolves to lure him away from Denver three years ago. The deal originally had an opt-out clause for the summer of 2024, something Connelly negotiated before signing because of the uncertainty surrounding the Timberwolves’ ownership situation. When the battle for control of the team between Glen Taylor and Marc Lore/Alex Rodriguez was still unresolved last year, Connelly pushed the option back one more season to allow him to see how everything shook out.
Lore and Rodriguez, who were the primary recruiters for Connelly when he decided to leave the Nuggets, ultimately prevailed over Taylor and took control of the team in June. With the ownership picture now crystal clear, his wife and three children settled in Minnesota, and with a team that has designs on contending in the Western Conference again, Connelly had no desire to leave.
“Super happy here,” Connelly said at his end-of-the-season press conference in June. “It’s been great, not just working with the team, but this whole community really feels like home. I think you guys are stuck with me.”
