Sherels played a lot today for the Vikes. Continues to do well with returns but really got exposed as a DB. Still one of my favorite Gophers. Basically a walk-on in college and the pros.

Yeah got thrust into some spots as a DB he wasn't ready for, but I thought he returned the ball well over and over. Had a great game in that department.

Yeah, he was horrible. It was pretty cool to see him on a big stage though.

Sounds great but I didn't get to see him play. But I did get to see Eric Decker catch 7 passes for 76 yards and 2 touchdowns against Kansas City. That gives him 85 catches for 1,064 years with 13 touchdowns for the season. Decker's 13 TD catches is second in the NFL this year. It is the best NFL season by any former Gopher in a good long while.

Sherels are been extremely solid this season as a returner, and on special teams in general. If needed he will be better at corner next week.

I hope the to watch Mike Carter as a Vikings corner next season.

Remember all of the nonsense on this board early in the season, about the Vikings being terrible and Gophers stealing the spotlight? I wish Gopher fans could just embrace both teams.

I don't what now what makes you think he'll be better especially if Winfield doesn't play and Cobb plays for GB.

Played great as a returner last night. Terrible as a DB. Got burnt a couple times and seemed to look lost. Hopefully, more playing time at DB will rectify that. I want to see him do well.

NIce to see Decker and Sherels representing the Gophers in the NFL. How many other Gophers will be playing in the play-offs next week?

Marcus Sherels is a great story but let's face it if he has to start the Vikings are in a lot of trouble. Sherels doesn't have the size or speed to be a great corner in the NFL, he is a returner and a role player and it has worked out great for him but he is not an every down corner and he most likely never will be. The fact that he has made it in the NFL at all is a true underdog story because based on his college career I would have given him zero chance to be on an NFL roster.

On a side note in relation to Decker the moment Manning signed in Denver I knew Decker was going to have a huge year if he stayed healthy. He is the kind of receiver that Manning turns into a star, great route runner, catch everything, knows how to get open. With the way Denver is playing right now and especially with the #1 seed locked up there is a better than average chance he might be adding Super Bowl Champ to his resume in the near future.

Pretty sure they are it. I think the only other active player right now is Matt Spaeth for the Bears who were eliminated from the playoffs the moment the Vikings got in.

Forgot one - He didn't graduate from the U but Tramaine Brock is playing for San Francisco so he is kind of a former Gopher playing in the NFL

+1 on everything.

Sure would be nice to see a former Gopher get a Super Bowl ring!

If he has to play nickel or extensive in the dime the Vikes are in trouble. Rodgers will go right at him. He was roasted yesterday.

Sherels played great in the return game. But as it went his entire Gopher career, he is way to soft to play DB. Always seems to be afraid of contact.

Maybe the reason he doesn't like contact is that he in tiny. Hard to tackle, but not hard to run over.

His minutes as a Viking may be numbered. Got burned often last week as a DB and a terrible mistake fumbling a punt return tonight.

Yes, I trade Sherels for Michael Carter in a heartbeat at CB. Harvin is their PR.

Harvin never returned a punt for the Vikes and I'd put the odds at less than 50% that Harvin plays another snap as a Viking.

LOL - He played D-back last week only because of injuries. The reason he is with the Vikings is primarily because of his punt returns. He has performed well through out the season so I don't think one fumble makes his day numbered. But congratulation, your unbelievable stupid remark above qualifies you as a Viking expert. It is not as high an honor as a Gopher expert but don't give up, you have shown great potential.:drink:

I think his play at cb may have negated his returning ability and he might/likely not be back next year.

I think he did a nice job as a returner and he was as good of a cb as anyone else vying for the last cb spot on the roster. Problem is it is not good enough. I don't see him back next year. You can't have enough good cornerbacks in the NFL these days.

Agree 100% - I think the injury to Winfield exploited the depth at corner

Boy aren't you a cranky poster. Mr. Sherels was one of the last decisions the team made in setting their roster and he has had an average season returning punts (9 yard average). Sorry, but if he can't step in and spell a DB on occasion his return skills alone are not going to make it easy to keep him. So mistakes like tonight do not help with his status on the Vikings. So keep feeling great about your expertese, we all know you're special

Which brings up the question....will Winfield be back next year? Not sure of his contract status. The guy is truly amazing.

Don't forget, Sherels came to the U as a walk-on wide receiver and worked his ass off to become a solid Big 10 corner. He earned a spot on the hometown NFL team due to his dedication, ability, and football IQ.

Sherels did not cost the Vikings one game this season and his error tonight didn't even lead to any Packer points. Sherels is a very serviceable NFL backup and is not worth of any of the criticisms in this thread.

Yup. Still proud of the kid. Besides, like someone said on Twitter.. He muffed the punt because he couldn't stand to see Joe Webb attempt another pass. Respect.

I think he is an above average returner. Problem is that above average returners are on every roster. You have to be good at your position and he simply isn't. Hopefully he gets a shot somewhere else, but I think his career with the Vikings is over.

Wouldn't that make him average?

Wouldn't that make him average?

If you assume each team has about 5 players who receive practice time returning punts and kicks then that is roughly 150 punt/kick returners. If you are in the top 50, I would consider you above average.

That is more than 1 per team, so I'm not sure that the statement that "if every team has an above average punt returner, then you are simply average" is accurate at all.
