Former Gophers running back Amir Pinnix watched Rodney Smith’s 88 yards and a touchdown in Thursday’s 23-17 loss to TCU, but he didn’t know it was the best freshman debut since he produced the same numbers in 2004.

“For real?” Pinnix said Tuesday. “I didn’t know that. That’s something else. The stats come out of nowhere. That’s crazy. That kid did a fantastic job. He came out and he was very fluid. That’s what I was impressed with how fluid and explosive he was. He did a real good job.”

Pinnix, who now works as a Cargill sales rep, was actually the fourth string running back when he ran 17 times for 88 yards and a touchdown as a freshman in a 63-21 win against Toledo 11 years ago. He played behind Laurence Maroney, Marion Barber III and Gary Russell. But Pinnix still showed the potential that eventually turned into a rushing season with 1,272 yards in 2006.

“I remember that first game when I got in, my energy level was on another type of atmosphere,” Pinnix said. “It was the first time I was in the game, so I was thinking ‘What can I really do?’ You just want to get the ball and you just want to run. So I can imagine what he was feeling like when he got in. His adrenaline was probably pumping.”
