Ex-Coach Dutcher: U Roster Rates High

Good stuff from Dutch. Always more interesting to hear a thorough analysis from a former coach without an agenda (think Dick Vitale if you're looking for an agenda) as opposed to a beat writer/columnist/blogger/rube. It's coming from someone who has been in the arena. Dutch doesn't mince words. No fluff in his opinions.

I really miss Dutch on the TV analysis(MSC days). Wasn't Mr Excitement(actually a plus in my book), but no one ever was more informative.

I always felt that Jim Dutcher and Bob Knight pairing up for broadcasting games, along with their analysis, would have blown Howard Cossell and Don Meridith out of the saddle.

Jim Dutcher soundbites could be recorded and distributed to the masses in MP3 or CD format...He could put Ambien out of business......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dutcher was spot on about Watford. This comment was a bit puzzling:
Basically the starting team from a year ago. But they haven’t added much. …I think depth is a problem with Indiana.”
3 -4 star recruits this year:
pg yogi, a mcdonalds all american. #3 on espn. And i believe he starts.
sf hollway #10 sf
pf perea #15pf
I think the issues with indiana aren't the lack of newcomers its Watfords inconsistent play and the lack of defense by anone not named Oladipo and Zeller.

^^^ Yes - Coach Dutcher's comments re: Indiana's depth were bizarre.

But I did enjoy attending his basketball camps back in the day.

This...
What’s the key to whether the Gophers can win the title this year?
“I think it’s mental,” Dutcher told Sports Headliners. “I just get the sense that the goal is kind of get back in the NCAA Tournament. That’s not your goal. Your goal should be to win the Big Ten championship. If they develop that mentality that ‘We’re the best team in the league, now let’s go out and prove it,’ they actually can win the thing.”

In '97 the thing that pleased me the most was winning the B10 Championship, the rest was gravy and a great ride. If you win the B10, things have a way of working out.

Dutcher listed Ohio State as finishing 5th in the conference. I think most people on this board have automatically lumped Ohio State as a top three team, I personally agree with Dutcher. They haven't earned a quality win yet this year, and after having watched them a couple of times I think they'll have a very hard time finishing in the top three.

If Deshaun Thomas goes off on a given night then they'll be hard to beat, but if you can limit Thomas' production, I think they'll be hard pressed to find another scorer to bear the load.

Just for the record; Ruesse had his top four same as Dutch. His #4 was Iowa....his surprise/underrated team.

1. Mich
2. Indiana
3. Minnesota
3. Iowa.....his surprise team.
