Even After Saturday's Performance, Gophers Defense Still Better Than Offense

Other fun notes from advanced stats:
Minnesota is almost the worst team in the country (including G5) at getting to third and short, our offense overall is not very good at breaking tackles, and contrary to what my eyes have been telling me, our rush defense is bad.

Thank you for providing the sound data to come to this conclusion.
It's infallible.
Sample set is more than appropriate.

The fact that we are 125th in the country at getting to third and short should tell you everything you need to know about our offense. Sample size is more than appropriate. Our offense sucks.

It “feels” like the pass offense has taken a step forward while the rushing has taken a step back. Scoring per game is equivalent to a Kill era team but without the stingy defense vs Big Ten competition.

I think those pretty slant passes have blinded us to some extent of how mediocre the offense has been and to it totally impotent for long stretches. The first half vs Nebraska was a debacle. Maryland, atrocious. Glimmers of hope, yes. Skill players developing, offensive line improving, tight ends getting involved in the pass game, QB perhaps, possibly improving over the long term horizon.

Not sure what to make of that. But I like it. (Not the data, but the fact that somebody compiled it.)

Yes. I agree. From Fleck's many years of coaching here at the U, he is not an offensive mastermind.
If he could coach offense like Saban, we would be #1.
The stats show it.
Saban is the best offensive coach.

In other news: We need to bring more pressure on passing downs and our DBs play too far off the ball. Not saying our defense is well managed; saying that our entire team is poorly managed at the moment.

Alabama is #1 in both passing and rushing marginal efficiency.
Their offense this year is better than their defense, by far, so I can tell you haven't been paying attention.

I'm not sure this should be a surprise. We can debate about whether the team is young or not young overall but I don't think anyone can argue the offense isn't young, especially with the injuries. Both QBs, both RBs, 3 of 4 WRs, 2 of 5 starting OL are all freshman. I think we should be optimistic about the offense going forward.

The defense should be better than the offense at this point.

I know from my point of view, having Fleck as coach, I expected us to lead the Big Ten in scoring and total offense because he is supposed to be an offensive coach. But the results are in. He is not a good offensive coach. The results are clear.

Anybody who doesn't see a bright future on offense is intentionally putting on the blinders, IMO. Stats don't lie (although sample sizes mislead), so yes, the offense struggles right now on the whole. They make tremendous plays at times, but then they shoot themselves in the foot with a ridiculous drop, stupid penalty, or avoidable turnover. I mean, just look at the last two games. Marching, marching, unnecessary holding penalty on a long TD pass. Marching, marching, WR drops a ball that would've gotten them into 2nd & manageable. Marching, marching, WR fumbles. Outstanding offenses overcome those mistakes. Their players pick up the 3rd and 12 after a penalty or drop. We're just not consistent enough right now. But I see huge potential on O.

I think the offense has a lot of potential. Our O-line and qb are struggling right now, but we have some nice receivers and running backs. Our defense on the other hand....

Once again, gopher football is terrible. Some of you posters have been posting messages of hope for 10 years. 50 yrs of bad football - Only the names change.

Actually, I think the pass protection last weekend was pretty good. I wouldn't say Tanner struggled last week either.

That is a huge problem but our offense was actually pretty good in the second half of last week's game.

They weren’t terrible in 2014 or 2016.

So we’ve been told Fleck is not a Xs & Os coach. Now were told Fleck is supposed to be an offensive mastermind.

It’s hard keeping it straight sometimes.
