per ESPN:

The most successful Minnesota football season in more than a decade was met with a caveat from fans that conveyed the Gophers were still missing something important to a community and a state. So when the team closed the 2014 campaign 8-5 with its first New Year's Day bowl game appearance in 53 years, people certainly were pleased. But they weren't satisfied.

The general sentiment looked something like this after each major triumph:

Minnesota defeated Michigan 30-14 to win the Little Brown Jug.

Yes, but ...

Minnesota hammered Iowa 51-14 to capture the Floyd of Rosedale.

Yes, but ...

Minnesota squeezed by Nebraska 28-24 to take the newly created $5 Bits of Brown Chair Trophy.

Yes, but ...

What about Paul Bunyan's Axe? Why couldn't Minnesota finally beat Wisconsin for border bragging rights and that trophy? How could the Badgers maintain the longest winning streak in the history of the most-played major college football rivalry?

"The No. 1 question I get in the state when I go out and talk is we've got three trophies -- but where is the Axe?" Kill told reporters in early August. "It's not, 'Hey, Coach, so happy to have three trophies.' It's, 'Where's the Axe? Where's the Axe?' We've got to get that done. I always keep saying, 'Sooner or later, it's got to happen.' I'd like it to be sooner."
