Spring breakout player: S Damarius Travis

Safety Cedric Thompson started 10 games last season and led the Gophers in tackles (79). Safety Antonio Johnson started in six games and finished fourth with 69 tackles. They’re both returning this upcoming season -- so the pair are a lock to return to their starting positions, right?

Think again. That’s the kind of spring that Travis had.

“If we had to play a game next week, Damarius Travis would be starting,” defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys told the Minnesota Daily last month. “He’s the most improved [defensive back] by far.”

Go Gophers!!

Really looking forward to watching Travis this year. For those who haven't seen him up close, he's an absolute tank for a safety and is bigger than some of our LBs.

It is nice to hear that Damarius Travis, Duke Anyanwu, and Berkley Edwards are all potential breakout players this fall. Add to that list Jonah Pirsig, Ryan Santoso, several linebackers and a host of others it is hard not to be excited about this fall. :cheer:

Yep, could have a huge year. I'm excited about all three of the safeties. Thompson played extremely well at the end of the year. I imagine we will see all three guys play a good amount.
