per Jesse Temple:
Tracy Claeys is a man who has largely spent his college football coaching career outside the spotlight. For 21 years, he followed Jerry Kill from Saginaw Valley State to Emporia State, Southern Illinois, Northern Illinois and finally Minnesota.
He learned from Kill how to not only build programs into winners but also to maintain success. So Minnesota's announcement Wednesday that Claeys, the Gophers' defensive coordinator the past five seasons, would take over on a permanent basis did not come as a surprise.
It's also the right move for the immediate future.
For the time being, a weight has been lifted within the Gophers' football program. Now they can again focus on the task of playing games. That continues Saturday with a second straight matchup against an undefeated team. Minnesota (4-5, 1-4 Big Ten) travels to No. 5 Iowa (9-0, 5-0) for an 8 p.m. ET game.
It will no doubt be a difficult test. But it is a test Claeys and his team should be ready to tackle as he steps into the head coaching spotlight.
"I think kids play better when they feel good and they're comfortable," Claeys said. "I don’t know how kids ever get comfortable when you're changing staffs all the time. We've been living proof of that."
