Espn has been releasing a ranking of the most "prestigious" college football programs. They assign points based on national championships, heisman winners, AP finish places (the higher the place the more the points), consensus All-Americans, first round draft picks, bowl wins, and more. They also subtract points for tv bans, post-season bans, overall bans, and other infractions.
They started the accumulating points with the 1937 season (since that is the first year the AP started selecting a "true" national champion).
They haven't released numbers 1-5 (they will tomorrow) but I Imagine Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Ohio State, USC, and Nebraska will be in there.
Where did the Gophers place? 33rd. Not too shabby considering how bad we were for SO long in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s. Also, had they extended this study 3 years further in to the past, we would most likely have cracked the top 25 with the addition of the other 3 national championships.
For all those badger lovers - we placed one spot ahead of them. Despite the fact that Badger fans love to tell us how meaningless our 30s championships were, and that they have more Heisman trophy winners and have had a much better last 15 years than us - we still finished above them in this fairly scientific study. Iowa finished 30th, by the way.
