per ESPN:

Work ethic fueled both Kill, Pittsburg State's defensive coordinator from 1985-87, and Patterson, who replaced Kill in 1988. Both had grown up in small towns: Patterson in Rozel, northeast of Dodge City; Kill in Cheney, west of Wichita. Both played linebacker in college (Kill played for Franchione at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas).

About the only difference: Patterson stuck with defense, while Kill switched to offense before entering the head-coaching ranks.

They became friends and have remained close for more than a quarter-century. Kill was Patterson's best man at his wedding. Until recently, they spent every year swapping football ideas.

"We came up the hard way," Kill said this week. "We worked hard to get where we're at. It's why we've been good friends."

Kill laughed.

"There aren't very many people from two small towns in Kansas to be where we're at. We come from common folk."

AP: Minnesota-TCU a somewhat reluctant matchup for coaching friends Kill and Patterson

Kill says he and Patterson shared ideas, and the fellow Kansas natives got to be friends. Kill was in Patterson's wedding a decade ago.

Patterson says it's tough playing against friends, but that both have jobs to do this week.

STrib: Close friends Kill, Patterson to be football rivals Saturday

When the Gophers run out of the tunnel at TCU on Saturday, a longstanding friendship will take a four-hour timeout.

Jerry Kill vs. Gary Patterson. Coach vs. coach. Friend vs. friend.

On the sidelines, however, the subjects of that hoopla likely will be grimacing. Kill and Patterson, for all they share, never wanted to share opposite ends of a stadium.

“I didn’t want to play it — there is no question about that,” said Kill, who actively fought scheduling the matchup. “But we have a new administration and again, I’m not the boss. I’m the football coach.”

“You don’t ever like coaching against friends,” Patterson said. “No. 1, they know more about you than anyone.”
