Biggest need for 2016: Wide receiver

Even with new coach Tracy Claeys looking to retool the offense as he puts his stamp on the program, Minnesota isn’t likely to start repeatedly airing out the football instead of prominently featuring its rushing attack. But the Gophers are certainly intent on expanding the passing game to try to keep up with some of the explosive offenses around the Big Ten, and they’ll have to take the next step this season without their most productive, reliable target now that KJ Maye is out of eligibility.

There are some intriguing options with experience already in the pipeline with Drew Wolitarsky and Eric Carter returning next season at wide receiver and tight end Brandon Lingen proving he can be a matchup problem for defenders. But losing Maye’s 73 receptions, 773 yards and five touchdowns is a significant blow for a roster that hasn’t exactly been oozing with talent at the perimeter skill positions recently.

Mitch Leidner has typically received most of the heat for some of the inconsistency throwing the football over the last couple seasons, but the quarterback hasn’t been solely to blame. He could certainly improve his accuracy a bit more heading into his final campaign with the Gophers, but he also will definitely need help from his wideouts. -- Austin Ward

How the 2016 recruiting class can help: The Gophers landed a huge prospect in four-star quarterback Seth Green, but having some weapons to throw to is of the utmost importance. The staff also took care of the need at receiver by landing ESPN 300 Dredrick Snelson and three-star Drew Hmielewski.

The Minnesota staff also has a few athletes committed who could fill roles on offense, but the problem the Gophers are facing now is keeping Snelson committed.

The No. 20-ranked receiver in this class is planning to visit Maryland and UCF and is also getting interest from Miami. If the Gophers don't sign him, it will be a huge hit to their 2016 class. -- Tom VanHaaren

Go Gophers!!

Well Maye only had 16 receptions the year before. Carter, Wolo and Still all had their moments as did Lingren. I also haven't given up on Gentry and Holland.

I like our depth

Someone is ready step up

I bet woli

I'm most excited about the potential of Still.

I agree, the author clearly overlooked Rashad Still... can't understand how.

The reason is they probably justl ooked at last year's stats and didn't really watch any Gopher football.

Still definitely has a lot of upside. Hopefully he can keep getting better every year.

We've got Woli, Carter, Still, Gentry, Holland, Register, and Streveler. Somebody will be the next man up.

Then, don't forget the TEs Duke, Woz, Lingen, Plsek, Scarver, Beebe, Witham, and Gibson.

It will be an interesting 2016 season. I'd like to see what Croft and Green will do in Spring practice. It might be that these two behind Mitch can open up the passing game more.

We'll be fine. This kid is so far from what I want in a Gopher that I just want him to cut ties already.

Not to nitpick, but Jerry Gibson has switched over to DE I believe.

how dare you!

wont matter who we have to throw to or who is throwing to them if the OL doesnt improve and give the QB time to read and let the WR's get open.

under Limey we hardly threw a slant or short route he was big on the intermediate routes that got 15-30 yards and our OL could not protect that long

WR, I can believe Woli, Still and Carter will be as good or better. Didn't see anything from the rest that indicates they can contribute. Hopefully someone new comes in this mix.
TE, I believe in Lingen on that list and that's it. Hard to believe at this point that Duke will ever see the field healthy, Woz is a bust, tall slow and catches less than half of the balls tossed his way isn't good enough for a tight end.

What about hometown hero Tyler Johnson?

Here he is juking a top 10 CB out of his jockstrap:

Carter sure looked like he could step into the role KJ played this year. Seems like an exact replica to me.
