ESPN.com: Ranking the Coaching Jobs (Big Ten)

Interesting list - thanks for posting. They have the Gophers at #8:

"8. Minnesota: Tubby Smith has had a string of tough luck in his days at Minnesota, mostly in the form of injuries, occasionally in the form of suspensions. The Gophers enjoy a strong fan base and an abode at The Barn, one of the more affably charming arenas you'll ever see. The location is a double-edged sword; Minneapolis is a great city but a freezing cold one. On the program's own merits (taken with a dash of history and tradition), we'd say the Gophers are ranked about where they should be."

Go Gophers!!

The obligatory cold weather reference does get old, but it's hard to argue where they have the Minnesota job listed.

I'm not so sure there is a big difference between the 4-9 slots, Minnesota has the cold but it also had to recover from a big scandal.

I agree. I think you could probably flip flop Illinois and Wisconsin as well as Ohio State and Michigan State, but otherwise I think they have it right.

The "freezing cold" is always mentioned with the University of Minnesota, but why does Madison never seem to get that label, is their weather really significantly warmer?

Knowing that someone will pull up average temperatures and beat me to death with their semantic sword...no. Minnesota is cold, but it's not like some B1G schools are in the tropics. Frankly, I don't notice too much of a difference. Cold is cold, snow is snow.

While it's true that Ill/WI/Purdue/MN can go in pretty much any order and MN is probably last currently, having Michigan ahead of all of them is ridiculous, IMO. A football school first and always, less recent success than Wiscy or Purdue and not much more than Ill or MN. A bad arena. Little brother to MSU. I don't see anything beyond the label to justify it.

1. Ind.
2. MSU
3. OSU
4. Ill
5. Wis
6. Pur
7. MN
8. Mich
9. Iowa
10. NW
11. Neb.
12. PSU

Interesting that Maryland is neither in the Top 10 or in the honorable mention. I'm sure they were the first school omitted.

Quite possible. Really depends on how much they value $$. That's about the only reason for Texas to be on this list ahead of them.

Michigan is not as good as Michigan St. in basketball but I would comfortably say that Michigan is still the most popular university in the state with the casual fans. They also have a national name and have more than enough money to pay a coach whatever is needed to get the guy they want. It is one of the wealthiest universities in the country. I am not saying it is clear cut, but a case could definitely be made for Michigan being a better job than those listed. Current performance on the court is not all that determines the appeal of a job.

Good pay, great facilities, good/great recruiting, great support from the AD, not high expectations... sounds like a good job to me. It's definitely better than Minnesota.
