per ESPN:

ill Hancock said the College Football Playoff is considering moving the playoff semifinals from New Year's Eve.

Hancock, the CFP's executive director, said the move could happen no sooner than after the 2018 regular season.

"We're exploring if there's a better [date] for the semifinals," Hancock said. "We're thinking about if New Year's Eve is the way to go."

The fact that Hancock publicly addressed the possibility of moving the games off New Year's Eve indicates it is "likely to happen," a source said.

"There's still work to be done," a source said. "However, I doubt Bill would have said something if he didn't think he could get the room [of the commissioners] there."

Go Gophers!!

How were ratings last year in comparison to the year before?

I agree with you all: Friend is getting married that evening, would really like to be able to celebrate her and her husband.

They aren't thinking about moving this years from my understanding. They are looking at moving 2019 and 2020 (2018 is already set for Jan 1, 2018)

Crap. Think the games will be on at the reception in downtown Minneapolis? Cross your fingers for me!

Last year we went to the first half of a game in our suits and then left to go to a 2pm wedding.
The game was not on at the church.
Thank goodness for 11am starts.

I would guess it won't be on, but enjoy the wedding. I think weddings are more fun than football.

The bull headed insistence on having the semi finals on New Year's Eve (most years) was something everyone, right down to common every day fans knew was a big mistake. I think the term "bull headed" is saying it lightly considering they even continued to resist after mighty ESPN weighed in on how bad an idea that was. Now, after the results have played out exactly as everyone predicted, they are finally starting to crack.

The New Year's Eve semi finals were a stunningly bad idea.

They did it to appease the rose bowl and sugar bowl...so 3 games on NYE and 3 on NYD.

Simple solution is to play 4 games on New Year's Day so even in years when the rose and sugar aren't semifinals they can still play on NYD.

The BEST solution would have been to have the sugar and rose to be semifinals in different years than each other. So you would not run into the problem nearly as often.

Doesn't matter to me. I don't go out on amateur night anyway.
