per ESPN:

When Navy hosts Temple on Saturday for the American Athletic Conference title game, there will be a large contingent of bowl officials with a rather specific rooting interest.

"I don't want to be un-American," one bowl official said, "but nearly everyone in the bowl industry, quite frankly, is rooting against Navy."

That official technically isn't rooting against Navy, just what happens if Navy wins. That's because if Navy wins the American and is in contention for the Group of 5 bid in a New Year's Six bowl, the College Football Playoff selection committee could delay announcing the highest-ranked Group of 5 champion team until Dec. 10 when Navy plays Army, six days after its final rankings are revealed.

The domino effect on other bowls could "paralyze" the system, a source said.

Delaying the Group of 5's bid to the Cotton Bowl would affect many bowl games involving Group of 5 teams. Officials would have to delay placing teams in bowls without knowing whether a conference champion could get pulled up to the Cotton Bowl. Additionally, opponents in those bowl games wouldn't know whom they were playing in addition to the obvious logistic and financial issues involved with waiting another seven days before planning travel, buying tickets and other factors.

Go Gophers!!

Navy's a better team than Western, they have more quality wins and play in a tougher league, and they played a tougher non conference schedule, if they win out they deserve it more. No diubt in my mind they would beat PJ and his PJism's because Navy actually has someone who can coach

Agree with you Navy is more deserving of New Year 6 bowl than Western Michigan, but it's not Western Michigan's problem that Army-Navy is the following weekend. If I were the committee, the right thing to do if both teams win this weekend is keep Western Michigan ahead of Navy. Problem solved. They CAN NOT assume Navy will beat Army, despite Navy's recent dominance.

The Army-Navy game all by itself on that weekend is one of college football's greatest traditions, but I think we all know tradition has gone out the window with the advent of the BCS and now the CFP. If this happens (Army or Navy potentially missing out on New Year 6 bowl) because of the timing of their game, the armed services folks, in conjunction with the AAC, will need to figure something out

One of the greatest traditions, since it stretches all the way back to 2009? This is silly, move the Army-Navy game back to conf championship weekend and be done with it.

I stand corrected. I thought they'd been doing that for a long time. My bad.

They can't move it to conference championship weekend because of the possibility Navy plays in the AAC championship game (like this year).

Ahh, that's a good point. Army-Navy was able to be on conf champ weekend for so long since both teams were operating as independents.

Can't they just work something out with the AAC/MAC so that they can swap games if Navy happens to lose?

Actually, the opposite of that could work well this year if they could get the Armed Forces Bowl to sign off. Navy is scheduled to play in that this year, but if they made the Cotton Bowl, that would then be open. I would assume Western Michigan would be a better choice than a P5 at large (if there are any) or a Group of 5 at large, plus I assume that'd be a better Bowl than whichever Bowl is the top for the MAC (GoDaddy?). It could literally be WMU or Navy (whichever is rated higher) goes to the Cotton Bowl then the other goes to the Armed Forces Bowl.

The arrangement with Navy was made before they were in the AAC, so the AAC wouldn't get the spot automatically.

Any other year I don't think it would have worked. I can't imagine either the MAC or AAC giving up their top bowl spot for a team from the other conference, even if it's because they would have a team in the NY6. They'd be losing a fair amount of revenue by doing that (unless it was a one or the other scenario).

What happens if Western Michigan loses tomorrow, Navy wins but then Navy loses to Army next week? That would be a clusterf%$k then. Another team could sneak into a big bowl. Unlikely but possible.

Who? It seems like even if Navy lost, they'd stay ahead of Boise or whoever else. FWIW, I think the odds of Navy losing to Army are 10% at best. It will be insane if they hold up most/all of the other Bowls until December 10th, considering some of them occur on December 17th.

Ya Navy's win streak vs Army is longer than Wisco's against us, it won't change and I can't wait to see this cluster unravel in person

Well perhaps they need to think twice about scheduling a game after the so called "bowl" weekend announcements. Perhaps they have to declare a "loss" when figuring the bowls unless there was a huge storm or something that forced them to schedule a game this late.

Western Michigan winning tomorrow, I would think, makes this article a moot point. If they end up 13-0 and have been evaluating them as a committee throughout the process, I can't see the committee having a 10-2 (or waiting for a soon to be 11-2) Navy jumping 2 spots.
As always, will be an interesting weekend.

Common sense agrees, but when the committee bumped up Navy six spots for beating a bad SMU team, it set off alarms that they were looking for a reason to jump Navy ahead of Western Michigan. Beating 9-3 Temple to win the league title, then beating 6-5 Army might be enough for them, regardless of what Row the Boat does tonight.

The American Athletic Conference title game winner should be seeded in the Division II play-offs. What a crap conference.

I think Temple resolved this problem....up 34 to 10....

Moot point. Especially now with WMU win and Navy Loss. Amazed how writers need to come up with story lines based on hypothetical situations. In many respects, like many of us (present company included) on GH.
