per ESPN:

The Big East's seven departing Catholic schools are expected to start their own league next season and will keep the Big East Conference name, sources told ESPN's Brett McMurphy, Andy Katz and Dana O'Neil.

Joining the Catholic 7 schools -- DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, and Villanova -- in the new "Big East" this fall will be Xavier and Butler, sources said.

Creighton has emerged as the favorite to become the 10th team, and would also join next season, according to sources.

Go Gophers!!

Are Creighton and Butler Catholic schools?! Just curious, not trying to make any kind of judgement about their inclusion one way or the other. Simply curious.

Butler is a "private school"... their website does not shout out any religious affiliation....

You need to learn how to use google.

Back on topic, this is my new 2nd favorite Bball conference. Some very fun basketball programs to watch, love Villanova, Georgetown, Xavier, Butler, St Johns, and Marquette.

If Butler isn't, they can always go after Notre Dame, right?

The Catholic 7's exodus has been executed absolutely brilliantly. Everything is coming together very nicely for them. I'm a Marquette fan so I'm pretty excited about this new makeup of the Big East.

I hear the name of the leftover Conference is down to the 1nHkyCfbBsbDncSolarDebat League or #bqhatevwr East.

Howeda, actually, I think you've struck upon the perfect name for the conference of misfits that soon will become the former Big East:

The Big Leftover

Notre Dame has expressed interest or a desire to go to the ACC for basketball. I've read that if they go New Big East, it would be only for a year until the ACC was ready to add another team???

I don't quite understand all the workings of these conference alignments so don't quote me on that as gospel.

Notre Dame is already set to join the ACC for every sport other than football (obviously).

Winasota --

lol, actually, I thought the same thing after I clicked on "quick reply" or whatever. lol Was lazy that day. Even some of my posts were short and brief.

howeda7 - Shame on you. My moniker is one expressing pride in the incredible accomplishments of Minnesota's Hockey, Football, Baseball, Dance, Solar Rayce, and Debate/Quiz Bowl teams over the years. To suggest it to represent a conference full of misfits, leftovers and unwanted schools, well, is unthinkable!!!

lol - But I realize you were just funning with me. I had a few suggestions for a new name for that conference at another website,

The Leftover Eleven, the Loser Eleven, the Orphaned Eight. Not sure how many teams will end up there?!

Conference USA Plus (or maybe minus is more appropriate?)

The Conference formerly known as the Big East - for all the Prince fans out there.

I've read the same thing about the one year stay. Not sure I buy into it since the Catholic Seven left in part because of Notre Dame and they've been adamant about no D1 football schools.

Not sure why they want to keep the Big East name especially if they are looking at Creighton and St Louis, seems to me they should look at making it more of a national conference and add Gonzaga.

Decisions aren't driven solely by the Catholic 7, though - if the TV guys with the money want Notre Dame for one year, the C7 can probably deal with that just fine.

I suppose it could happen but we're only talking about Notre Dame basketball. A good program but not a game changer like they are for football.

Will their game day programs be in paperback or hard cover?
