So is ESPN. Rutgers may have fewer scholarship players than Kansas mid season at the current rate.

I don't think we can even have a team in the rose and peach bowls if Ohio state makes the orange bowl

Unlike in the BCS days, there aren't any limits on how many teams a conference can send to playoff access bowls. Palm believes both Michigan State and Wisconsin will be worthy of being selected to those games after Ohio State is placed in the playoff. And since the Rose is supposed to get the next-best team if the Big Ten champ is unavailable, Palm must think Becky will finish ahead of Sparty.

Im am trying to find where I read that as of last year, second place BIG and PAC are placed in the Rose Bowl if the conference champ is top 4. If OSU goes to the playoffs the BIG championship runner up goes to Pasadena. It used to be it was open season but no longer.

My understanding is, in years when Rose Bowl is not part of the CFP (this season an example). ...

if B1G and/or Pac 12 champion is part of the CFP, the next highest ranked team(s) by the committee gets slotted into the Rose Bowl. Or do the conferences (B1G and Pac 12) have a say in which team(s) gets sent to the Rose Bowl? I have to believe if there's an 11-1 Michigan State or an 11-1 Ohio State that doesn't make the playoff, they'll be ranked higher than anyone in the West?

ROSE BOWL GAME PRESENTED BY NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL (Pasadena, Calif.)

1. When not hosting a semifinal, the Big Ten Champion will play in the Rose Bowl Game, unless among the top four teams.
2. If the Big Ten Champion qualifies for the playoff, the Rose Bowl Game will choose a replacement Big Ten team.
3. The Rose Bowl Game has sole discretion on a replacement team, and will generally select the highest‐rated available team, but will take
into consideration final College Football Playoff rankings, head‐to‐head competition, division champions and most recent Rose Bowl
Game appearances.

Very helpful, thanks TJ. So there is some discretion involved. I like that the Rose Bowl gets to select the team. There are going to be years where the Rose Bowl's selection could be very difficult, perhaps even this year.

Outback Bowl: Minnesota

If offered the chance right now to take the Outback Bowl bid, or let it ride and see if you can go to a higher (or lower) level game, what would you do?

Outback Bowl is almost certainly the best non-"BCS level bowl game" (or however you want to say it) the Gophers can advance to this year. Citrus won't take MN back given the way the contract is written.

I might hedge the bet if I had to commit today and take the Outback Bowl. That's a good to great bowl on Jan 1 in a nice stadium.

Would you hold out hope the Rose or Peach would take the Gophers (who would need min 10 wins to get a berth - so its plausible if all goes well).

With the schedule and our offensive output I'd probably take the Outback Bowl now rather than letting it ride. Next year's schedule is the one that should be targeted for the west championship and possible Rose Bowl.

I would absolutely take the Outback Bowl as an outcome for this season. Just win the damn thing.
