per ESPN:

8. Minnesota (1-0, preseason: 8): Credit defensive tackle Ra'Shede Hageman and the Gophers for making big plays in all three phases in their opener against UNLV. But the 51-23 final score masked some of the issues Jerry Kill's team must address before the competition level improves. Minnesota needs a more physical effort from its offensive line, and it has to get off the field on defense after allowing UNLV to go 4-for-4 on fourth down. The Gophers need to clean things up this week on the road against New Mexico State.

Go Gophers!!

The seasoned players made plays to win the game. Minny should win this one in similar fashion

Everything about that power ranking is spot on.

If a team that gives up over 600 yards in a 3 point home win over a MWC team is the 5th best team in the conference, we really aren't any good.

The ESPN Talking Heads don't talk to make sense, NateDawg. They talk to talk. That is all.

Shouldn't have detected. I agree that everything he said from the O-line to getting the D off the field was spot on.

User, how the hell do you get the D off the field when you have a opening half KO run back for a TD, a blocked field goal run back for a TD, and a pick 6 run back for a TD? If you can come up with a rule change for those 3, then our D would not have to be back on the field right away. Oh, I know how, change the rule so that the scoring team receives the following kick off. How silly of me.

I agree with the good doc, but i was more referring to the rankings themselves.

What people need to realize is this: After week one, no one knows more than I know. And that's nothing. Babblers babble just to babble. They give us something to talk about. It is much ado about nothing.

What the hell are you talking about? They allowed a crappy team to go 4 for 4 on 4th down. Are you happy with that? Part of the article gives full credit to the big plays in all aspects of the game. I agree with that, and I also agree with everything else that was written in the description.

Who do you think we should have jumped?

tOSU
scUM
Northwestern
Becky
Nebby
PSU
MSU

Sure, Nebraska looked really bad against a MWC team, but do you truly think any national (or local) writer is going to place us higher than them?

MSU looked like crap, we could have jumped them;
Nebby looked like crap, we could have jumped them.
PSU looked ok, a wash.

We looked like crap at times, but good at times. Not bad for a first game, a 28 point win.

I guess it gets back to the expectations of the fans, and those are perfection every play, all game, from the get go.

Bottom two teams in the power rankings are teams MN doesn't have on the schedule. Go figure. On the other hand we don't have the top rated team either.

We would never score against their defense.

Wasn't it just two years ago where Gray threw for 295 and ran for about another 75 against Michigan State? Didn't Da'Jon McKnight almost have 200 yards receiving? Gophers lost by 7 to the eventual B1G runner ups; not to mention their top 10 defense that year. The Gophers scored 24 points with Gray at QB.

The Spartans' D this year isn't what it was in 2011 and you think that we couldn't score on them? Two years makes a big difference and It's hard to compare the Spartans to then and now but it's also hard to compare the Gophers to 2011. With Nelson and this years offense, I think we could score against their defense.

These early season rankings always rely heavily on the previous year(s)

They'd be a lot more interesting if you took somebody who has been in a lengthy coma or stranded on Mars for a couple decades and made them watch the opening weekend.
