per ESPN:

The hey-it-could-be-a-lot-worse group: Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota

This tier includes teams who at least have some experience behind the starter, though they'd hate to see their main man go down. Zander Diamont started the second half of the 2014 season for Indiana after Nate Sudfeld went down and played well in a win over Purdue in the finale. Perry Hillis played in three games last year for Maryland and took starter's reps this spring, along with Shane Cockerille, while Caleb Rowe sat out. And while the Gophers are definitely Mitch Leidner's team, Chris Streveler has shown an ability to run the Minnesota offense in spurts.

Go Gophers!!

I really hope Mitchy can keep the bowl game momentum into this season. I haven't heard this much hype surrounding a Gopher football team in quite some time.

TCU game looks bigger and bigger as the days pass. Feels like a "must compete" game.

Wow. That is a lofty goal. /s

I thought Streveler looked like he was throwing the ball better during the spring game. with his running ability, if he can just throw the ball a little bit, he can be a credible backup - or starter if Leidner gets hurt.

Where did I say that was the goal? I'm hoping that's the worst-case...

1. Getting blown out might not set a great tone for the season and would destroy much of the off-season excitement.

2. Competing would get their juices flowing and gives them a chip.

3. Winning is the ultimate objective and most desirable.

It's not a must-win game, but it feels like a must-compete game. Do you want me to draw a picture?

No picture needed. Calling it a "must compete game" (twice now) tells me all I need to know. Not sure that phrase has ever been used before. Pretty sure it never should be used again.

Why not? It's not a must-win game, the Gophers wouldn't be hurt much perception-wise by losing to one of the (projected) best teams in the country and it's early in the season. If you get blown out it shows you don't belong with the big boys, but if you are at least competitive (or win) you maintain or increase your perception. Losing to TCU isn't going to be held against the Gophs unless they get utterly destroyed. If the Gophs want to maintain a top 25 kind of ranking, then it is imperative that they are at least competitive.

the TCU game is intriguing mainly because i dont think we played a very good game last year down there.
we gave the ball away more than we normally do and good teams take what is given and make something out of it.

this season i can hope we are a better team(on paper at least but that is why they play the game) then to have them at the Bank will give us a little more hope of playing well.

but as much as i hate to say this we will go as far as Mitch can take us. Not comfortable on Chris taking the lead and running the ball more. I went to Sprint Game and its a whole new game when those 290-300+ guys can actually level you on any given run.

but I agree that the TCU game is a must compete. we cannot afford a blow out at our house

I was thinking initially at least that the TCU effort was the worst of last year, then quickly realized it was not even close to the worst performance of 2014, that honor goes to the steaming pile of crap that was the Illinois game.

At the risk of being overly negative the home win against Purdue was probably the second worst effort of the year when they made an overmatched Purdue team look like Oregon, or a Tiller team from the late 1990s. I was not too thrilled with the Northwestern game either, but at least it was a win, and Northwestern was better than their record showed.

Our offense was really rotten in the TCU game and that is what made it go downhill in a hurry. The TCU offense was great so I am not sure that the defense in that game was that bad. The Gopher defense in the two "bad" wins mentioned above was not very good at all.

What do you "need to know?" Seriously. I'd love to understand your side of this. Are you suggesting I am weak or something because I suggest the worst acceptable outcome is a competitive game? Not trash talking... seriously curious.

I'm not suggesting anything about you. I don't know you and typically like your posts. My side is simple: I find it ridiculous to use the term "a must compete game" - for any team, any sport, any situation. You may have just invented that term, although you may not want to take credit for it.
