Espn article: TCF Stadium and the economy

Didn't we plan for the stadium a long time ago, before the economy went down hill?

Also, nice typo in the article, "In 2002, the city of Minnesota"

Silly premise. The economy couldn't have been stronger (even if by smoke & mirrors) at the time we started this project. Still I have been impressed with the way the U has navigated the last parts of this process.

If we were trying to get this off the ground now it wouldn't happen for a lot of reasons. We got lucky on the timing of all this to a large degree.

We also got lucky that we don't have to share with the Viqueens. Nothing takes away the college football atmosphere quite like that.

Funny part of all of this, is that it's the Vikings (the one with the sweetest deal at the Dump) that is getting screwed now. The Gophers and Twins will open new parks in the next 9 months, and the 'queens will have to play in the Dome....with very little money out there for a new park (esp. the type they are looking to build). I know that the NFL does put up money for new parks to be built, but even still....a billion dollar park/playland isn't going to happen for some time.

Couldn't happen to a better group :)
