I was told this weekend from a member of the student council that there are actually four "final candidates" for President. Eric Kaler was the only one named, because the other three specifically asked that their names remain confidential. It also sounded like Kaler was not the number one target of the four.

Just thought I'd debunk the "only one candidate" myth.

Isn't he the only candidate left if he is the only one who is going through the MANDATORY public meeting?

The other's all dropped out, so he is the only candidate. They have to go public to get the job or be considered for it.

Who said there was only "one candidate"? Whoever did was wrong. There is one finalist, and that's all I've ever read.

Well, that is not exaclty correct.

There were four candidates in the running to be finalists. State law mandates once someone is a finalist, they be named publically. 2 of the candidates dropped out because of this. The 3rd was not passed along by the board of regents to be considered a finalist. Therefore, Kaler IS the only finalist. It is a mere formality at this point that Kaler will be the next President.

This is the press release from the Board of Regents.

The Board of Regents is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Eric W. Kaler as a finalist to become the 16th President of the University of Minnesota when Robert H. Bruininks returns to the faculty in June 2011. Dr. Kaler currently serves as Provost & Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Vice President for Brookhaven Affairs at Stony Brook University. He is an alumnus of the University of Minnesota, earning his Ph.D. in chemical engineering in 1982. His record of accomplishment is significant and he possesses the characteristics needed to build upon the University of Minnesota’s strong foundation of achievement while articulating a clear and compelling vision for the future.

Here is a STRIB article discussing the slim possibility that Kaler is not the lone finalist.

Sorry, meant finalist and not candidate.

It would seem like Kaler is the clear frontrunner due to the public meeting, and the lone finalist, since that is all we've heard. That is why I was surprised to hear this as well. I just know that everyone was surprised and confused when the U said they were going to announce all the finalists for the job and the next day only one name was announced. This is where I was told that there were actually four finalists, but only one was named publicly. If the other three have since dropped out, then so be it and this thread can be deleted and I apologize for wasting your time.

Kaler, to my understanding from people who know him both personally and professionally, is a HUGE supporter of athletics and football in particular and did a great deal for SUNY-Stonybrook sports while there. This is a good person to have running the show from a fan perspective.

This is all I needed to hear. I already got my BA from the U, whatever he does for the school education wise is on him. I just want a winning Athletic Department now.;)

It looks like he's a good supporter of athletics, and his academic resume looks rock solid. It looks like he's a winner all around. Maybe the other finalists decided they didn't have a chance, so they pulled out. The hiring should be a formality, unless there is some reason not to hire him, and it doesn't like there will be any. Just because the other candidates pulled out doesn't mean that the quarterfinalists get bumped up to finalist.

There is a new article on Kaler in the STRIB tonight. This piece of the article I like...

Kaler is sure to get questions about athletics when he arrives on campus, particularly about finding a new Gopher football coach. The team is limping toward the end of a losing season and coach Tim Brewster was fired last month after going 15-30 since 2007, including 6-21 in the Big Ten.

"That's clearly a problem," Kaler said. "We need to work very, very hard to identify the right coach for the football team. Somebody with the right kind of experience and the ability to recruit well."

It's just the sort of challenge Kaler said he had been working toward for several years.

"When the opening at the University of Minnesota appeared, it just seemed like a truly perfect opportunity, combining my love of the place with my career objectives," he said.
