Mark Coyle speaks
Mark Coyle was named director of athletics at the University of Minnesota on May 11, 2016.
There have been a lot of new developments since he took over, including firing head football coach Tracy Claeys and hiring P.J. Fleck and raising money for the Athletes Village project that had started under the watch of former athletics director Norwood Teague.
The Athletes Village will include training facilities for football and men’s and women’s basketball. The Land O’Lakes Center for Excellence will feature a dining area, training spaces, conference rooms and academic centers for all University athletes.
According to Coyle, the Athletes Village will open in January 2018. The University has raised $105 million to date and has a goal of raising $166 million. About $16 million has come in the last month-and-a-half with contribution from 3M and TCF Bank. TCF Bank already had its name on the Gophers’ football stadium and 3M will have its logo added to Mariucci Arena across the street, which is now officially called 3M Arena at Mariucci.
“I tell people we don’t need to have the biggest house in the neighborhood, but we want to be in the neighborhood as our peers in the Big 10,” Coyle said.
