According to scout.com, would be nice to see thios kid accept.

If he is as fast as is claimed, he could have a good future with us.

Does this kid play basketball at Chaska too? If his dad is the Joel Engel I know about I would imagine so. Joel Engel I believe played at one of the Dakota schools for hoops.

I hope he decides to join the team. There is a good chance of earning a scholarship (Rallis and others did so quickly). If he isn't good enough to warrant a scholarship after a couple years he can always transfer to a smaller school.

I'm not trying to pull a Lawrence here but is this really news? Is'nt preferred kinda automatic as a minimum for ranked Minn kids?

I guess it's not the most exciting news, but what else is there to post about?

If he comes to the U this is an excellent pick up. I've got a friend that scouted him for a Big 12 school and he thinks Engel should walk on for the U. He said that Engel has the skills to start in the Big 10, possibly as early as his sophomore year, when he gets college level coaching.

We have 30+ seniors with scholarships on the roster this year and we can only bring in 28 scholarship players in the 2010 class so his chances of getting one by 2010 look fairly good.

I am curious which Big 12 school was scouting him because I didn't see any listed on rivals with him.

good point. I guess really anything that introduces a topic about Minnesota Recruits is good enough.

I've often been curious about this kid. He's been talked about a while, I have expected him to blow up and catch some decent offers. It would be cool if he walked on.

Related. Can anyone confirm this. Rengel the kid from Sartell, is he the same kid that did so well in the state track meet last spring? If he is, that's pretty damn good for a FB don't you think?

Yes, he was in the state track meet.

I'm not sure why Rivals doesn't show everybody that has shown interest in Engel but he has been offered preferred walk on status by Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska.

I looked it up. Remember this is for a FB and not a WR/DB

Nick Rengel

Class AA 4th in the 100 at 11.37
4th in the 200 at 22.84

FB/TE/DE we'll see how it shakes out when he's on campus.

Are you friends with some of the coaches at Nebraska then?

Yes. My best friend from HS. He was at Nebraska for a year under Callahan (while Cosgrove was there at DC), followed Turner Gill out to Buffalo, and then returned to Nebraska this year. He is just a GA at Nebraska but he is hoping to catch on as a position coach at a smaller D1 school.

He returned home to Minneapolis after the bowl game and spent the weekend at my place so we discussed all things Gophers & NCAA football and I took him over to see the new stadium. He's a big Gopher fan and wants return to Minnesota to coach here someday.

Off topic, he scouted Jewhan Edwards for Buffalo last year and he absolutely loved him. He is also really high on Hageman (he was one of Nebraska's top 2 TE targets) and he liked Bryant Allen's video when I showed it to him.

so grunkiejr what did he have to say about cosgrove as a coach/recruiter?

Funny, I just posted something about this in the "Perspective on Cosgrove" thread. He didn't like Callahan and thought he was incredibly overrated as an offensive mind. You wouldn't believe the rants that I heard from him while he was working under them. :) His biggest criticism of Callahan was that his playbook was a collection of plays rather than true offensive philosophy. Therefore, the playbook was incredibly hard for college players to grasp and there was no logic in the playcalling.

Despite Cosgrove's reputation with Nebraska fans he wasn't negative toward him at all. He pointed out that the defense was the strongest unit on the team first few years Callahan was at Nebraska. He said that they did have one really bad year and didn't elaborate. However, he went on to say that Pellini is a defensive genius because of the results he is getting out of a defense that lacks talent. The Nebraska teams were rated high on recruiting the past few years but he said there were a couple guys that they were high on that turned in to total busts and Cosgrove had to work with that his last year in Nebraska. I think they are starting 2-3 walk ons that have developed better than 3 or 4 star guys that they brought in.

I don't mean to knock Rengel or anyone from Minnesota, but it is amazing how much slower our track athletes are compared to other states. For comparison, Rengel's time would have put him with the 60th-fastest time in Florida. Florida's state champion ran a 10.40. In Texas, Rengel would have tied for third among GIRLS!!! He would not be in the top 110 times listed in the state of Texas for boys. Their state champion for boys ran a 10.32...110th-fastest time in Texas last year was 11.34.

A little off-topic, but I found an old ESPN the Mag the other day and it happened to be the "Next" edition from Adrian Peterson's freshman year at OU. I read in there that Peterson ran a 10.3 100m as a senior in high school. That's phenomenal.

Cosgrove was liked by a lot of the players there but he never instilled that family type atmosphere and that hard edge to the defense that Pelini has. My biggest concern with Cosgrove was that he lost the team his last season and didn't know how to reel them back and didn't know why he lost them. You are right that they were starting several walk-ons this year from small town Nebraska on defense as well as a former starting RB, Cody Glenn who they converted in spring ball to LB and who played very well until he was suspended for the last few games.

What do you mean by "family type atmosphere" and "hard edge" and how do you know Pelini has it while Cosgrove never did?

You are correct, I do not know if Cosgrove never did have the edge but when you see interviews with Husker players who have played for coach pelini and coach cosgrove they have talked about the higher expectations and toughness that pelini has brought to the team and how they would run through a wall for him, his LSU players would say the same thing. The players also talk about how they feel Pelini and his staff generally care for each player as a person (i.e. family atmosphere) versus it was more of just a business under the old staff.

Could you please provide a quote where a player talks about how it was more just about business under Cosgrove? If true, it might significantly change my opinion on the Cosgrove hire.

I agree with you. I'm not sure if my HS was different than others but all of the good football players were either playing baseball or just lifting in the spring rather than running in track. The population of the state obviously has some impact on the numbers but there has to be something else going on there because it is such a drastic difference. I'm curious if they have separate classes for track too like they do for every other sport. It doesn't seem necessary but given the MSHSL's propensity to allow everyone to participate in the state tournament it wouldn't surprise me.

If you want to get a better idea of some of the issues that were going on with Callahan and his staff there as well as with the former A.D. in addition to how they ran the program, I would suggest reading the book "The Nebraska Way" by Jonathan Crowl. A lot of the insider information came from the long time head football trainer Doak Ostergaard.

Good point but, how many of the girls and other guys ran his time or better weighing 225+?

I guess I didn't mean for my post to rip Rengel at all, but more that a 225-pound guy is the 4th-fastest in the state. I was ripping Minnesota as a whole. Rengel's obviously a great athlete, but unless he's the next coming of _______ (I can't think of anyone his size who has been a great track sprinter), it's a shame that there aren't faster people here in this state.

I believe there are only two classes in Minnesota for track. I think that seems reasonable. FWIW, I think Florida has five.

Yeah my high school was the same. I know I played baseball and so did most of the other good athletes from the football team. We were only allowed to play one sport per season.
