From the PP

"Certainly there's respect for Marc Trestman and what he's accomplished in his career. He seems to be doing very well in Canada at the present time. I suspect he'll be in the mix and he'll be considered. But we're going to look for candidates who are going to be on everybody's "A" list for a college or university appointment."

This eases my weary mind a bit.

I read that and I was confused as to why the Pioneer Press seemed to twist his words and go out of their way to make it sound like Trestman was a top candidate when in reality Bruininks only mentioned his name AFTER the interviewer asked a specific question about him. Even then, his comments would lend more to NOT having Trestman as a top candidate than having an inside track, as the first paragraph of the PP article led the readers to believe.

It seems like the local media (the Pioneer Press in particular) are having a love affair with Trestman.

What bothers me is the last sentence of Fuller's lead-up paragraph:

"And he mentioned former Gophers quarterback and current Canadian Football League coach Marc Trestman as being a candidate."

STOP.

This is completely superfluous information. If you read Bruininks' response he basically just stops short of completely dismissing Trestman as a candidate. Why is the media pushing this guy so hard? The mind boggles.

Because it sells papers and more importantly, pulls eyeballs from the web to the story (or they think it will).

UGH. I saw that interview in full, and I don't get the media's love affair with Trestman. And how they are doing everything in their power to bring the 'prodigal son' home..

UGH.

Which is why it feels like the freaking Twilight Zone. Marc Trestman's name is drawing more local intrigue than literally any big name, qualified college coach?

Many know him, they like him and more importantly they THINK he'll take their calls first!

NOTE: I had started a duplicate thread which I've requested to be deleted. Here's my original post:

Prexy B had an interview with Marcus Fuller published in the StPPP this morning. Very similar to the interview he had in the Trib a few days ago. His response to one question on Trestman jumped out at me (with comments):

Q: Are there some hard feelings by Trestman because the process didn't go as well he thought it would with the job in 2007?

A: I don't know. I don't think there should be any hard feelings.

MAYBE THERE WAS A GOOD REASON TRESTMAN WASN'T HIRED 4 YEARS AGO?

Maybe some of Marc's friends took it a little hard.

I GUESS BRUININKS DOES HAVE TO SUCK UP TO THE BOOSTER CROWD A LITTLE BIT

Certainly there's respect for Marc Trestman and what he's accomplished in his career. He seems to be doing very well in Canada at the present time.

AND WELL INTO THE FUTURE

I suspect he'll be in the mix and he'll be considered.

IN OTHER WORDS, STFU ABOUT TRESTMAN

But we're going to look for candidates who are going to be on everybody's "A" list for a college or university appointment.

THE KEY WORD IN THAT SENTENCE IS "BUT". IN OTHER WORDS TRESTMAN DOESN'T HAVE TO GIVE UP DRINKING LABATTS. PREXY B WENT ON TO SAY "BESIDES, MARC LOOKS LIKE A PERV. I WOULDN'T HIRE HIM TO BABYSIT MY GRANDKIDS", BUT THE StPPP LAWYERS MADE MARCUS STRIKE THAT PART

Whether they come out of the college or pro ranks, we will definitely want to have somebody with college and university experience as the head football coach.

"HOLY GAPING HOLE IN THE TRESTMAN RESUME, BATMAN!"

My guess is we'll lean toward those who have been successful head coaches.

AS OPPOSED TO GUYS WHO HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL HEAD COACHES? I GUESS McCARNEY DOESN'T NEED TO BE WAITING BY THE PHONE, EITHER

But we're not ruling out the possibilities of coordinators in excellent programs. That would certainly be the second place we would look.

RBtL, IF THEY START BRINGING IN GUYS LIKE VENABLE, TREADWELL, OR APPLEWHITE, THAT MEANS THE GOLDEN, PATTERSON, PETERSON, CALHOUN, ET AL ALL SAID THANKS BUT NO THANKS.

Also RBtL, I don't see Lesley Frazier getting much consideration, unless its just a courtesy interview to keep Dungy and local boosters/media happy. As for Trestman, it wouldn't be worth the airfare to bring him in for a courtesy interview just so some downtown MPLS booster doesn't get his boxers knotted up. The last time we let those clowns call the shots we spent a quarter century in the dome

Yes, this was my point exactly. It is flat out false reporting. The interviewer was the one that brought up Trestman's name. Bruininks had no choice but to answer, and actually clearly downplayed Trestman. After all that, the same reporter puts words into Bruininks mouth and makes it seem like HE was bringing up Trestman as a candidate as the interviewer dedicates print to it in the lead paragraphs prior to the actual Q&A. That is EXTREMELY misleading and nearly a 180 degree turn from the actual reality of what was discussed in the interview.

WTF?

That doesn't make any sense. Marc Trestman doesn't sell papers. 98% of Minnesotans have never heard of the guy.

The Big Name guy Bruininks is referring to would sell a lot more papers.

The reason why the media is latching on to Trestman is they want to be the ones who predict the coach correctly. They see Trestman as the most likely hire right now, so until something else surfaces, that is who they are going to pimp. It is all about trying to be right so the reporter/columnist can garner more validity.

Eh, fair point if we're talking statewide. By this point I suspect MN sports fans know who the guy is b/c he's been tossed down their throats by the local media. But that's prob not a large enough group to move the needle. Your reason seems more plausible.

What's hysterical is that basically nobody has ever actually seen Trestman coach his own team.

If you watch 12 man Quebec football raise your hand.

I thought so.

I still don't trust him...

I trust Bruininks, Its Maturi I don't trust.

Bruininks is out soon and wants to leave Gopher football a lush future, not the scorched earth Brewster left it.

Maturi is the one who got duped by a tight ends coach with no HC/OC/DC experience besides high school. Maturi should be ashamed of himself and that is why Maturi is not allowed to make this decision by himself.

Bruininks has made it clear that he and many others will be much more involved in this coaching decision because you simply cannot swing and miss this time.

There used to be a Canadian Football Game of the Week on WTCN when I was a kid. Leo Lewis, the father of the Leo Lewis who played for the Vikings, was a great running back for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who were coached by Bud Grant. That, and the fact that multiple players could go in motion, is about all I remember of the Canadian game.

They play the games on NFL Network sometimes. I caught a bit of the Hamilton-Toronto game last week.

FWIW, Trestman's Alouettes play on NFL Net versus Hamilton, at 6:30. Get a view of the man who will, without question, be our next head coach.

Which player is it.

Is it broadcast in English? No wait, I don't care.

Maturi will make the final decision, but it will probably be more of a formality. Brewster was a bad hire, but the booster's haven't been blameless either in some of our prior bad hires. If the boosters manage to pressure the U to hire Trestman, and it doesn't work, they had better own it. I see nothing about Trestman that indicates he would be a good college coach. I'm not saying he would be a bad college coach, but I want some tangible reason to think he would be a good college coach.

The last time the media rallied to a coach was for Gutekunst, also supported by many players. Giel, the AD, was trying to bring in Bobby Ross, from Maryland, and the coach then new at Air Force, Fisher DeBerry, who went on to have a great record there. Both were interested, but Giel was undercut by a man named Frank Wilderson (sp?), a U bureaucrat who had a position in the athletic department. Wilderson, the players and some in the media, got their way. Ross went on to coach Georgia Tech to a national title and DeBerry had a very good career at the AF Academy. Ross visited the campus and felt snubbed, as I recall.

I think the final decision will be Prez B's. I'm getting the feeling that Maturi might just be a figure head in this.

Prez B is definatly becoming more involved and outspoken this time around and he seems very determined to get it right this time. I think Prez B will get input from boosters and football people and then make the final decision.

I think Prez B is also responsible for the Mona hire.

Just my thoughts.

I understand it's the nature of this forum and it's great for GH, but I can't believe the number of posts regarding the coaching choice. Way too much gnashing of teeth, outright threatening, psycho-analysing, and reading of tea leaves. Might be enjoyable for some, but my head hurts. It really is early in the process and won't have any influence on the final choice anyway.

I'm just ready to watch a football game tomorrow that I think will be a lot of fun and see how the lads react.

Wow, there's some names out of the past. I had forgotten about that whole debacle.

Like Dave Boswell once said, "it's a forgotten memory."

All true. Probably has something to do with the fact that the team has given us nothing football related to talk about.

Wanna bet? Name your price. There is NO chance he will be hired. None.
