Empty seats at other places?

So being the CF geek I am, I'm watching a replay of last season's LSU at Georgia tilt.
Quite a few emtpy seats in the upper levels, even well into the 2nd quarter.
One would think at a place like Georgia that a huge conference game against a powerhouse would be jam-packed, but apparently not.
I realize their stadium probably seats in the 80,000 range, but it still surprised me a bit.

I would think it would've been sold out. Usually, the only SEC teams that don't sellout are Vandy and Miss. St.

Sanford Stadium at Georgia is the 8th largest stadium in the country and seats 92,746.

I recall a few years ago watching Florida play Vandy (probably around 05-06) and there were some empty seats in the swamp. The game went to OT and they showed people walking along the empty rows in the upper decks to move towards the end where the OT action would be played.

When I went to the Gophers game down in Iowa City about 5 years ago, I remember their student section never coming close to filling up in the endzone. It was maybe 2/3 full.

Folks who claim TCF had 'nobody' at the games in Oct and Nov are full of crap. Those of us who really go to the games know it was pretty much full. Sure the students upper level was empty but they crowd down in the lower section.
I heard Justin Taard and Lake make that statement last weekend about the the SDSU game and can't understand why they would lie about the overall attendence being poor. Why say things that are not true?

The LSU/Georgia game was not a student thing. It was in sporadic spots in the upper levels.
I just think most people make too big an issue of it at Minnesota.
I would bet most D1 (or whatever it's called now) schools don't reach capacity for every game.

Our friends to the East think

there are never any empty seats in Madison. The fact of the matter is even for the Minnesota gameyou can pickup tickets out front for 10.00. When they played Wofford I bet there were 15,000 empty seats. If they have a home game on the deer opener it is like buying a ticket at the Dollar Store for the visiting fan

Here are a few:
Sun Devil Stadium holds 73,000+ 2009 ASU avg attendance = 48,550
Rose Bowl Holds 92,500; 2009 UCLA attendance = 64,547
Papa John's Stadium holds 56,000 (and is being expanded); 2009 Louisville attendance = 32,450

there are never any empty seats in Madison.

This is hugely anecdotal but after 15+ years of Badger football season tickets, my coworker's parents (who live in Madison) are not renewing their season tickets. Each year they attend roughly half of the home games and sell the remaining tickets. They said last year, for the first time, they couldn't give away the tickets they didn't use so it became too expensive overall.

FWIW

Heard a similar comment from a neighbor who is a UW alum whose family has seasons there. Said the extortion of their fans in seat licenses, annual donation requirements, etc... were driving factors. Didn't ask about the ability to sell them, but would make sense.

Seems like a little bit of what's happened to us at Mariucci. It's more important to sell the seats than to fill them with fans. Eventually, the ebb and flow of this philosophy does a few things: 1. Kills the atmosphere. Attendees are there for the experience rather than to support the team. Not fun being told to sit down by some guy who couldn't care less about the game and is more interested in getting his ring kissed by some sales rep. Also end up with lots of empty seats in prime sections (see center ice at Mooch). 2. Drives up prices exponentially. We have the highest ticket prices in the country for hockey, by a large margin. As long as the economy and team are strong, no problem. Once one of those worms turns...uh oh.... There's a reason that Gopher hockey which normally has had renewal rates in the 99% range suddenly is at 90% and is burning through the waiting list at an alarming rate. They also are cutting deals on suites like no ones business. I take some solace that maybe UW will face the same fate at Camp Randall.

Great ammo for those who make blanket statements about Gopher football attendance.

As a person who has been to almost every game at Camp Randall over the last 12 years, I can tell you that you are way off base. There has never been close to a game with over 5,000 empty seats let alone 15,000. Sure maybe one guy found a ticket for $10 in the upper deck to a Minnesota game, but that is rare. I would know, I usually buy tickets for a group of about 10 for this game, and any decent seat is going to be over $100. In fact, I had to pay around $90 for seats to the ASU game at the very top of the lower deck. Don't believe me, check online brokers and see what tickets cost. Big Ten games are always packed, a lot over capacity.

Yes, I know I am a troll (my brother graduated from The U of Minnesota, so we keep tabs on each other's teams) but I cannot stand for outright lies. Good luck this season, I look forward to a good game in October.

P.S. Attendance for Woffard was 79,000+

As many trolls like to note about TCF, butts in the seats is alot different than paid attendance. They might have listed 79,000 paid attendance for the game but I would bet there weren't nearly that many people in the stadium.
