Earlier this season, there was chatter about early signing period in addition to NSD in February.

Refresh my memory of previous GH threads, but wasn't Jerry Kill one of the coaches exploring the possibility?

Whatever happened to this topic? Are they going to table it on the next big meetings of conference commissioners or the NCAA?

I can see the SEC not being in favor of that, but for northern teams like the Gophers where recruiting is tougher to do and more expensive as the epicenter of recruiting is in SEC/ACC/Big 12 country.

I think Kill was a supporter of this, but I could easily be wrong. I agree it would likely be an advantage to schools that are wired enough to find the under-the-radar guys before they blow up on the national stage. Kill and company seem to be pretty good at that.

Yes he was.

Gophers football coach Jerry Kill says college programs will continue to try to get players to rescind on their commitments to other schools until the NCAA institutes an early signing period.

Currently, national signing day, which was Wednesday this year, is the only time when recruits can officially commit to college programs. An early signing period, possibly in August, could help abate the decommitment game, Kill believes.

"I don't know how many times in the Big Ten there are flip-flops," Kill said. "There is nothing you can do about it. Everyone is trying to compete to keep their jobs. I think until they have an early signing day, you are going to see that because then it's a little harder to do that."

Seeking decommitments is one of many issues recruiting analysts and high school coaches have taken with the increasing speed of the recruiting process.

Another possibility is an early signing period in December, Kill said.

"It's not up to us," Kill said. "It's up the grand scheme of college football."..

Coaches want an early signing period. Oh, how they do (Save Stanford's David Shaw and a few others).

In fact, an informal CBSSports.com poll of 25 coaches this week revealed 19 unequivocally want to shift from the current early February setup to August or December. Five are either indifferent or can learn to accept it. Kentucky's Mark Stoops is against the notion because of how it could change the recruiting calendar...

Tennessee's Butch Jones and Stoops both want to preserve the recruiting calendar, including the July dead period, but Jones said he likes the discussed model that allows early signing for players who haven't taken official visits.

That would be cumbersome for Minnesota's Jerry Kill, who's "a long way away" from many players that visit his campus.

"If it was signing day where after you can bring some in on official visits, at a different time, I would certainly take a look at it," Kill said.
