Dutcher on Gophs lineup: You don't want to be experimenting in the middle of February

Jim Dutcher, who coached the Gophers to their last official Big Ten title in 1982, said using poor mental toughness as an excuse is just "a crutch."

"In the Iowa and Ohio State game, there was no fight back in them," Dutcher said. "But if you say, 'We didn't play hard enough,' then the next question should be, 'Why not? These are crucial games."

Dutcher blames a big part of the losses late in recent seasons on Smith's unstable rotation. The Gophers have started the same five players -- Andre Hollins, Austin Hollins, Joe Coleman, Rodney Williams and Trevor Mbakwe -- in all but one Big Ten game this year. A shoulder injury kept Williams out of a 57-53 loss Feb. 10 against Illinois.

But even with the same starters, Smith's substitution pattern is all over the place, especially Wednesday against Ohio State, Dutcher said.

"What Tubby is struggling with is what is his best combination," he said. "He's experimented (Elliott) Eliason and Mbakwe at the same time, and then he'll use Oto (Osenieks) out there more now and (Mo Walker). You don't want to be experimenting in the middle of February."

I would think that by now, Tubby should know the best combinations and it's not the platoon system. If a player is not producing then sub 1 or 2 positions at a time.

IMO, one of the biggest reasons so many subs are playing poorly. Nobody knows their roles. Substitution patterns change from the first half to the second. Players have no idea what is going on and it shows. We don't even know who the 6th man is, it changes every game.

It all comes back to Tubby's horrible recruiting. Let's face it, we don't have many pure basketball players. We have a few athletes, we have a few decent kids who scrap but we don't have much skill.

Dutcher was a very good coach. Maybe he had a different idea what he would do with them. I think most coaches in the country would be happy to start with the Hollinses at the 1 and 2 guard. I guess that's the magic question around here. Is it A) the players or B) the system? I think it is about 75% 'B' myself.

You're correct 19. Actually my buddy got a copy of the pre-trial
transcripts ( he was in law school at that time) and it was laughable
to say the least and pretty graphic. Let's just say the person involved was no
Mother Theresa. The U put the cart before the horse and became Judge, Jury, and
Hangman based on pure conjecture.

I completely agree with Dutcher - not because of who he is but because I see it the same way. Our talent is adequate.

Tubby is a good person, but he lacks the ability to direct these kids in basketball 'adversity' - he lacks the ability to assess and correct the team reaction to adversity and that leaves them exactly where they are - floundering.

There are kids in every program that don't pan out. Smith, Williams, and Lee
were wrongly accused. Why should Dutcher be on the chopping block anymore
than Clem, Monson, or Tubby? Keep patting yourself on the back Scout, but you might want to look up " delusional" in the dictionary.

Agree wholeheartedly. There are lots of things that I don't want happening in February (such as the second part of a 3-8 skid by a top 8 team). There have to be some wholesale changes, I heard the Goose may start for Rodney tomorrow despite a healthy shoulder. Maybe a message.

I don't think Dutcher is saying that you can't make changes in February. I think he is saying that you don't want to have to make changes in February.

Part of the problem was they were in a place they should not have been on a road trip the night before a game, regardless of the legal issues there was a problem with how it happened, I always felt that was the reason they were dismissed from the team.
