Go Gophers!!

Good for him. Like that he is sticking with Duke. P.S. Michigan basketball lost to Eastern Michigan tonight. First New Jersey Institute of Technology this past weekend, then Eastern Michigan. And now the Duke football coach of all places has apparently turned them down. Bit of a rough week for the old self-described "Champions of the West" if I don't say so myself. :p

That said, I don't feel bad for them in the least.

May be worthwhile perusing the MI boards if this is true.

Very interesting, he seems so much older than 60. He's younger than Mike Riley which is shocking
.

Decision: Coach 8 more years at Duke and leave a hero. Go to Michigan for 3 years and get fired. Make ~ the same total money in either case. Tough call.

I think this is a trend we are going to continue to see. As expectations stay out of control at the historic blue blood schools, coaches aren't going to want to leave a school in a major conference where they have found some success and have things going their way just to go get fired in a few years for going 9-3.

Great points being made in this thread. This report is still somewhat surprising, but it makes sense when considered alongside these considerations. The argument could be made that Duke is closer to an ACC championship than Michigan is to a B1G title. Just need one down year from FSU and a couple lucky bounces.

The world don't move to the beat of just one drum. What might be right for you, might not be right for some.

I'd coach Eastern Michigan for 8 million dollars a year and never look around...

My exact sentiment.

I wonder if Michigan is getting a reputation of a program where the boosters stick their noses in too much.

The Rich Rod dismissal is looking worse and worse by the day and the way they went nuclear on all-around good guy Brady Hoke doesn't endear them to many coaches. Their ridiculous 'Michigan Man' prerequisite is as tone deaf and exceedingly arrogant as the boosters that perpetuate that policy and with college football's arms race, a good paying job sans the outrageous expectations can be found most anywhere.

Why the hell would you coach at Michigan if you were already successful enough for them to want you?

What trend? Our own conference just hired someone in this EXACT position a week ago.

Cutcliffe seems to be a south-of-the-mason-dixon-line coach. Strange fit IMO for Ann Arbor.

Kind of depends what you define as "found some success" - Riley is under .500 vs FBS schools since 2009.

Exactly. The Duke guy is coming off of back to back winning ACC season and is one year removed from a divisional title. Riley has had losing Pac 12 seasons in 4 of the last 5 years and has not won a division since divisional play began.
