Drew Goodger DE 3* commit

I like adding a DE prospect but yet another commit without a relavant offer from another big time school. I know its late in the season but still....

I was going to make a sarcastic comment about his offer list before one of the mouth-breathers did, but someone already beat me to it. Kudos!

O.T. : Where does the term "mouth-breathers" derive from?? It's one of my favorites and makes me chuckle every time I see it.

Welcome aboard Drew!!! Go Gophers!

Nice measurables, ranked at his position, Kill and staff recruited him while they were at NIU so they are confident in his abilities. Good pick up.
Nice to have you on board Drew!

Mouth Breather:
Noun-

One who hangs their head, breathing out of their mouth at the bar after having too much to drink.

I'm sick of these mouth breathers stinking up my bar.

My thoughts on the film:

-Good burst off the ball. Kill likes this.
-Runs well for a guy his size. Again, Kill likes speed.
-Decent job using his hands, but he has some technique work to do.
-Needs to get stronger. Held firm at the point of attack but did not manhandle anyone.
-Strength and explosion work will be important for him. Looks like a decent tackler but is not explosive enough when making tackles.
-Looks like he has a good feel for the game. Understands how to block (which direction to go, what kind of block to execute). On play action, he did a good job of selling the block before peeling off.

Overall, Goodger looks like a good project. Needs to dedicate himself to strength and explosion. My guess: he will be a VanDeSteeg-type player (that type of production- not as thick but a little faster).

Goodger vs Garin

Both 3*'s

Garin 6'4" 220 lbs. out of high school

Goodger 6'5" 235 lbs.

Garin 9 BCS offers and Boise State

Goodger 1 BCS offer.

Two years in Garin is 245 lbs.

Goodger likely projects at at least 260 lbs.

Garin in a tweener to this point. Would he be a better LB or HB? I like Goodger's potential.

Goodger is a very good player and performed very well at both the KSU and KU camps. He also has very good size, but the only reason he wasn't offered by either was they worried he just wasn't quick enough overall. KU just offered a DE out of Wichita that is a very athletic but raw (offers also from KSU, TCU, CSU, etc.). Goodger is more polished than Reynolds, but Reynolds is much more athletic.

To be honest I think Goodger is going to be a good player in college. He is going to be someone that is assignment sound and tough. The type you normal see do big things at schools like Northern Illinois and then sit there and scratch your head asking why someone like KU or KSU didn't take him.

This may be a case where Coach Kill is more likely to take a chance on Goodger than either KU or KSU due to having more scholarships to give out. Both KSU and KU are nearly filled up and are down to their last targets.

DE. I will take several more like this one. Anyone thinks we are going to go out and get top DL until we start wining is dreaming. This kid looks like he can develope into a good DE.

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised in time that Goodger may be moved inside at DT. He is more around 240-pounds now. Either he bulks up to be a 260-pound SDE or you get him up to 280-pounds or more and play him at DT. He still has room to fill out for sure.

I have to work on my reading. When I saw the headline, I thought "Drew Gooden is going to give up an NBA basketball career to play college football?"

As for Goodger, he'll red-shirt, put on some bulk, and hopefully contribute.

Is he any good?

The team I kind of feel sorry for is Northern Illinois - first we stole all their coaches now we are stealing all their recruits, too!!
