Doug Gottlieb: Tubby Smith could leave Minnesota

Timberwolves could win 20 games. Vikings could go to LA. Colton Iverson could transfer to Alaska Anchorage to play hockey. A lot of things could happen.

Why did Tubby leave Kentucky in the first place and why was it that Jimmy Williams was not allowed to be his assistant?

1. Crazy psycho fans.

2. Jimmy Williams connection to scandal at very scandal averse school.

HAHA. Sampson to the NBA. And Rodeny might join Royce's rap group

"The hottest chatter in coaching news is the speculation that Tubby Smith will be on the move this offseason."

The "chatter?" Really, Gottlieb? Is this the chatter that you've been reading from rubes on GopherHole? Stop making smoke without fire; stuff like this is just obnoxious. We've heard the same rumors since Smith landed here.

Oh, God forbid that a middling ACC team like Georgia Tech buys out Paul Hewitt and wants to land Tubby. What could he possibly accomplish professionally by leaving a place like Minnesota (a middling Big Ten team) for a program like Georgia Tech? Ludicrous. If his ultimate coaching goal is to transform a mediocre program into a dominant one, then he is currently in a position with resources to do so at Minnesota. Leaving here for a lesser opportunity makes absolutely no sense and should be disregarded.

Job change - perceived as better fit for him. My personal opinion (not based on facts) is that Georgia was his best "fit" ever but he only stayed there 2 seasons.

Williams was nixed by Gopher Compliance Dept after Tubby was given "go ahead" to hire him at first, based on testimony in lawsuit last summer.

NC St - GT

Who is to say Tubby would be the best fit for either program if HC opened up? A coach over 60 to rebuild a program?

I agree.

What stock does he have? I get the felling Tubby still thinks he's a top 5 coach.

Baloney.

He is one of 10 active coaches who have won NCAA. He ranks 11th among active coaches in NCAA game W-L (%) record.

He ranked 16th among active coaches for career W-L (%) record in latest NCAA (summer 2010) stats.

Nothing (no one) says Top 5 coach. They are Coach K, Izzo, Roy Williams, Calipari, and Calhoun.

YIPES!

Colt on skates! That I would like to see.

:D

So FOT, do you believe that Tubby will leave or not? You have frequently said he is very happy and is planning on retiring here. Has that changed do to the teams struggles?

Gottlieb has been running this story for 3 years. Seth Davis will run it during the tournament too.

Somethings in life are so predictable. I like Doogie and all, but at some point in the next month he's going to run a trade Kevin Love before he leaves piece and even if the Twins are 10 games up in May he'll throw out a trade Delmon Young now while his value is at a maximum, or deal Cuddyer and Kubel if you aren't keeping them long term.

I actually think the chances of Tubby leaving are better than him staying at this point. I know he has a decent class coming in, but based on his actions recently, he just seems to be sort of checked out.

One thing that seems to play out: once the media starts publicly calling you out when you start losing a number of games that the majority don't think you should lose, things tumble pretty quickly (Mason, Brewster, Monson, etc.).

I think there is still a decent chance he comes back, but it wouldn't surprise me if he left.
