Double "E" to state!

They were going to state no matter what happened in that game.. but, good to see the local paper's take on it... this one was covered a few minutes after the game ended a week ago in another thread:

Elliot Eliason's Chadron squad is heading to state next week in Lincoln (March 11-13). They were going to make state no matter the outcome of tonight's (Monday, 3/1/10) C1-6 District Championship game against Minden.

Last game, the Cardinals beat up on Kimball 61-31, taking a 10-0 lead to start the game and never looking back. EE had 18 points, 8 boards, 5 assists and 3 blocks in that one.

Tonight, it was Minden's turn to feel the wrath... i.e., height... of the Minnesota-bound Eliason.
First quarter starts off slow.. 7-7, sloppy play, EE with 2 points. Second quarter, it's all Eliason. EE scores all of his team's 12 points and they take a 19-12 halftime lead. Minden's biggest guys are 6'4".. Chadron threw the ball inside to Elliot and let him go up with the ball while being double and tripled teamed. The smaller Minden guys got into early foul trouble.. refs not letting them get away with blatant holding and elbowing. 2 guys fouled out, another had 4 fouls.. all due to fouling the heck out of EE. Announcer kept saying that this was the first time all year that the refs have called a 'normal game'... refs have usually let defenders push Eliason and get away with holding him up with forearms all year long without calling it.

In the third quarter, Minden outscored Chadron 14-10, cutting the lead to 3 points... it stayed close for much of the fourth quarter, before Chadron pulled away near the end, winning 42-34.

Eliason with 27 points... started off 0/3 from the line, but finished 7/12, including 5/7 in the 4th quarter. His teammate Zac Bargen had 9,.. no one else had more than 3 points for the 21-2 Cardinals, who won their fourth consecutive district championship tonight.

Good the kid's team is doing well and he's putting up some nice numbers.. but I think TWeber's comments explain it well: Eliason has been standing under the basket with multiple guys a half foot or more shorter than him, hanging all over him... which doesn't translate to what he'll see next year real well. But, he's coming into a good situation where he doesn't need to be a huge contributor right away and can learn from the older big men. I'll be cheering for them to win state.

If Big Ten opponents hang all over him with multiple guys, I guarantee we have the balance to make them wish they didn't do that.

Sorry I missed....

the earlier discussion.

Hopefully......someone will have some video from this years state tournament. I have yet to see any video on our new big man. I've read the reports, but one always like to take a look for themselves.

Any links would be appreciated:clap:

How does a team make it to state regardless of the outcome of a district championship game?

Dude, it's Nebraska.

Some of the games will likely be shown live at:
netnebraska.org

Chadron will play at 9am CT on Thursday. A win means they play again at 9am CT on Friday, and if they make the championship game it'll be at 11:30am CT on Saturday morning.

Back to the making it to state question.. they have 'wild cards'... and a goofy little point scoring system. See pages 17, 18 and others in the Nebraska School Activities Association's Basketball Manual if you want the details (trust me, though - you don't... someone was real bored working the cornfields to come up with this stuff... I like details, but geez):

The wild card system in Nebraska is not the greatest, but they started it out of neccessity. The population and towns in the state are very lopsided with more towns and population in the east. When there were equal districts across the state, some of the best teams in the east were staying home and lesser quality teams were winning districts out west. So they reduced the number of districts and added the wild card teams. It started with the biggest schools and now they have the wildcard in all classes. It is their attempt to get the best teams to state. It is certainly not perfect but it is what it is.

#2 seed Chadron (21-1 in ‘games that counted’ to the NSAA) tipped off around 9am this morning vs. #7 Wilber-Clatonia (20-3). I didn’t get to listen or hear it – but talked with some folks that were at the game… Chadron wins 41-32.

At half 18-15 Chadron, EE with 4 pts, 3 boards, 2 blocks. In the third quarter, W-C scores a bucket, the Chadron goes on a 10-0 run to take a 28-17 lead. End of third, score was 29-21 Cardinals.

During the second half, back and forth, 5 to 8 point separation for a lot of it… W-C just couldn’t quite get back into it. Free throw shooting by Chadron was good enough to get the 41-32 win. EE finishes with 16 points and had 'at least 5' blocked shots. Chadron's team FT shooting was a miserable 8/18.

Some thoughts from Nebraska bball guys: EE may struggle at first in the Big Ten, but can be a contributor in time. Compared to a year ago, he is much more fluid in his movements… not nearly as stiff. Relatively soft hands, can pass the ball.

Chadron plays again tomorrow at 9am CT.. against the winner of the #6 Minden (18-4, Chadron just beat them in a game that was closer than it should have been) and #3 Falls City (23-2)

If the Cardinals win tomorrow (which they should), they play at 11:30am CT on Saturday morning. Game video for that one (but not tomorrow’s) will be available live at netnebraska.org. #1 Hastings-St. Cecilia (22-1) would be a good test.

Chadron won today 55-47. The championship game tomorrow will be streamed.

Tough game - Minden lead at the end of the first three quarters: 17-14, 30-26 and 39-38.

Zac Bargen stole the show in this one for Chadron... Minden concentrated on EE and let Bargen do his thing... Eliason unofficially with 9 points and 11 boards.

Tomorrow morning you can watch EE in action (see this thread for link) against the winner of the other class C-1 semi between Hastings St. Cecilia (23-1) vs. Norfolk Catholic (23-3).

Hasting St. Cecilia might roll Chadron. Junior big man Zach Sterup, at 6'10" and probably a good 265, contributes 13 points and 8 boards a game. You may very well see him playing in the Big Ten in a couple of years - but more likely in football than basketball. Dalton Sealey is another top player for them and a pretty good football player (RB) as well.

Not a lot of chances to see Chadron play this kind of talent, and not often you get to see EE play against a guy with Sterup's size... check it tomorrow morning if you can.

Potential big break for Chadron.. Sterup went to the hospital last night and got IV's, feeling like hell. He's going to play, but how long or how effectively will be the story.

Chadron... Hastings St. Cecilia... for the C-1 title... NOW: http://netnebraska.org

(PS - very good feed for a high school basketball game)

I just tuned in. He looks a little tired.

I have been watching and he has played the whole game. He played pretty well in the first half, a few blocks and he can make a turn around jumper in the lane. He hasnt been given the ball a ton but he also looks for his teammates when in the post which is nice to see.

Cool, thanks for the report.

St. Cecilia wins 46-40. They led 10-7 and 21-17 after the 1st and 2nd quarters... Chadron took a 31-30 edge into the final quarter.

Started off very sloppy and not especially well for either team, with the exception of Dalton Sealey who looked good all game. Unofficially EE with 14 points (6/12 field goals, 2/5 FTs).. had around 6 boards and 4 blocks. He'll need some work to compete with the big boys. Bargen had a horrible day shooting.. just brutal.
