Yes, Doobie... this is a tough one to differ with you on... how could anyone disagree? In Big Ten play this year, Ralph is only averaging 9.3 points on 54% shooting, while getting shooting a free throw only 5.7 times per 40 mins. Last year, he had huge numbers of 5.9 points per game on 48% shooting, while shooting from 15 feet 3.4 times per 40 mins.
Plus, last year he wasn't plagued with that passing-to-open-teammates affliction.. he only got 0.7 assists per Big Ten game last year. Awesome! This year, he was taken a huge step back, getting credited with those icky assists 1.9 times per game.
And damn it, the guy is blocking 1.8 shots per game this year vs. 1.2 last year - that's so mean of him - clearly he's taken a step back here as well.
And he's not keeping up those fantastic foul numbers anymore - what good is he if he's not going to be getting into foul trouble at least as much as he did as a frosh? Only 2.6 fouls per 40 mins this year, down from 4.5 last year. C'mon, Ralph! Get with it!!
You know what else is trouble? Those rebounds. 6.3 per game this year, 9.0 per 40 mins... last year he didn't let those rebound numbers get so high -- 4.4 per game, 7.8 per 40 mins. Why, oh why is he taking these steps backward?
Ralph Sampson has not taken a step back in Big Ten play this season. Including or excluding one of the Penn State games - either way you want to qualify it, your opinion on this one is silly.
However, Ralph has not progressed as much as some hoped and/or expected and the lack of consistency can be frustrating. I think the lack of aggression and fire in his persona will always hold him back from realizing some of his potential, but he's undoubtedly going to be a very good college player and will continue to improve.
