Doogie RIPS coaching staff: Coaching not a bright spot in Gophs loss to Spartans

Unfortunately, Brewster hired guys he thought could recruit... and some can -- Hammock comes to mind... but coaching-up guys during the week, and in-game has been missing this year. I do though think that the next coach wouldn't be foolish to keep Butler solely as a LB coach, and Hammock as the RB coach.

The only reason a new coach keeps current members of an outgoing staff on hand is if he feels the person is truly special. Yeah, Horton and Hammock have proven to be decent recruiters, but that's about it. I'm sure they will find other jobs, but I'd rather a new coach, assuming he is the type of coach we expect him to be (GOOD!), will have his own guys that will be as good or better than Butler and Hammock, and won't carry any risk of not getting along with the new coach (as may happen with Butler and Hammock).

Also, when existing coaches are retained, it's not often they stay around for a long time - they don't feel the same sense of loyalty.

So, Hammock and Butler - good job in a difficult situation, but best of luck to you.

Hard to argue... I just know that Dantonio offered Hammock a job last offseason, so he is ok in my mind (not so much Dantonio, just that a major school offered him a chance to get out)... plus, we have seen the RBs improve this year... and have seen him get some kids out of Florida.

Seriously Doogie? Is this news to you just now? What is the point of your article? I think we all know our coaching staff as a whole sucks and that is why we will have a new one next year. But thanks for pointing out the obvious.

Good article Doogie.

I posted this on another thread, but the 3rd or 4th and 1 play calls have been embarrassing. We clearly cannot line up in a Jumbo package and overpower BT teams. Why do we continue to do it? Keep 3 receivers in the game and spread the defense, then hand it off up the middle. Only makes sense, right? These coaches continue to bash their head against the wall in honor of the absolutely stupid "pound the rock" slogan.

Anyone know if Donnell Kirkwood can play again this year? Based on his limited action, I believe he is the best of the running backs.

They're still professionals and still should be held accountable and subject to scrutiny.

Re: Kirkwood. He'll sit out the rest of the season, I presume, to maintain his ability to red-shirt (medical?).

Oh? Really? He played versus MTSU and USC. I remember Coach Brew said he did not play against South Dakota because "he did not practice well." Is 'SC the last time we saw him? It would be great if we could squeeze a redshirt year out of this season.

I love that Bleed links to all stories -- we all want as many hits as possible -- but I wrote that for the 1500espn.com audience, a good majority who likely didn't see a second of the game, and have likely seen just a little of the Gophers all year... aim those articles at people like my dad, who are casual observers.

He'll be able to last I heard... just not sure which kind it'll be.

That is great.

Backfield next year will have Bennett, Eskridge, Kirkwood, Wright and Edwards? I smell some position changes coming...thinking about Edwards specifically.

I think the rule is that you can only play in 20% of the games to get a medical redshirt, and you actually have to have a semi-serious injury. You can't just be like Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack. "Owww, my arm!". Assuming Kirkwood meets those criteria, he'll still have 4 years of eligibility.

With you on Oreske's rugby style punting. Who the heck thought that was a good idea?

They struggled with the tight punt when they were backed up to the back of the end zone. He didn't have room for a full two step kick. That might be how they practiced it. Rarely do you see a punt that goes more than 40 yards in that situation.

But it wasn't just then. He's been taking two side-steps for the last couple of weeks on all his punts.

I don't agree with everything Doogie commented on in his list of 10 bad choices.
1) If you don't have the talent to play press coverage (the gophers dont) it is better to not play press coverage. You will get picked apart more, but the gains are less than 20. Withers tried to play press in the first 1-11 debacle. Less painful than the lack of press coverage is the inability to recruit a pair of corners in the past 4 years that could play press coverage.
9) When you are gonna go 1-11, you gotta let the players celebrate a little bit. If you take away their ability to get excited about ANYTHING cause they are losing, it is going to be difficult to sustain a 100% effort from then.

As for Taking Gray out.......Gray should have been in at least a full season ago. Once Weber came out, I knew it was the end of Weber, I just knew. The staff is baffling. Good take by Doogie.

Agree with your two points Rosemountain. We definitely do not have good enough corners to play press coverage. I believe we did a lot of that against Ohio State. Certainly didn't help any.

Having Gray come out at quarterback made me excited to watch. Taking him out was a stunner. I just don't understand.

Good article Doogs. I think everyone who said "gray isn't playing because he's terrible" have been proven 100% WRONG. He looked more than competent, especially since he's taken most of his reps at WR. It's time to give him the keys for a game. Web can spell him if he's really struggling or if we get down big. But let's add some excitement and put in Gray. He's clearly our only chance to beat Iowa.

Doogie...think this says it all:
Shockingly, Horton chose to finally allow Gray to get some snaps at quarterback on the third series. Great.

Play No. 1: DeLeon Eskridge 11-yard run.
Play No. 2: Gray 5-yard run.
Play No. 3: Gray 4-yard run.

At that point, facing a 3rd-and-1, the Gophers (1-9, 0-6 Big Ten) called a timeout. Out went Gray, and in came Weber. Why? It made absolutely no sense.

Predictably, on 3rd-and-1, Eskridge was stuffed, then on 4th-and-1, fullback Jon Hoese was too. Keep in mind that Hoese is not healthy after missing most of the last two weeks with a hamstring injury.

The decision to not run with Gray, and worse, take him out, will go down as the dumbest coaching move of the year.

These coaches should be replaced by High School coaches for the rest of the year!

Yho, Stan

That is great.

We have seen enough of Bennett and Eskridge, neither is a true Big 10 back. Neither is a threat. Cannot break a tackle, push the pile, run over an opponent both go down from an arm tackle. When you think of Big 10 backs think of Darryl Thompson, Marion Barber, Thomas Tapeh, I think I have made my point.

Kirkwoood, Wright and Edwards are the future, Edwards has the size, power, and explosion to make the difference. He is a load. Spending more time on either Bennett or Eskridge is more of the same old, they give us the best chance to win.

I agree with the view on Edwards. I will be very disappointed if he is not given an extended look at RB.

Going back to Kirkwood redshirting, unless he sustained a season ending injury he will not be able to redshirt. Once you step on the field and play a down in a game you are unable to redshirt for that season.

I'm only saying this from what i've seen of him in HS and from some coaches who coached against him had to say, and I believe Edwards will almost certainly end up at LB. Until I see Edwards take a snap at RB before being switched over to LB, I will not believe any differently.

Now, as to the original point of this thread. I haven't see much from Hammock to deduce that he is anything more than simply a decent recruiter. I would say there have been minimal (if any) improvements in Eskridge or Bennett. Neither of them seems to have become Big 10 starter quality material. The people really in the loop might be able to have more knowledge to come up with the assesment that Hammock can coach, but I can't believe it's from anything we've seen from our RBs. He seems to be the epitome of everything that was wrong with the Brewster staff. They could recruit but couldn't coach.

Butler might not be a bad guy to hold onto. He is a really solid recruiter who also seems to do a decent job of coaching. Triplett and Campbell both improved quite a bit with his coaching and two of the only brighter spots on the defensive side of the ball (Tinsley and Rallis) are coached by Butler.

I agree with the view on Edwards. I will be very disappointed if he is not given an extended look at RB.

It would be the medical harship waiver. I don't think you need real strong proof to get that waiver, you just simply need to have been "injured" before the first 30% of the season. He would qualify for that (pretty similar boat to Rallis last season). I actually think Hageman (if I remember right) got a couple snaps last season too before switching to DE and getting "injured" and needing a medical harship waiver.
