per Doogie:

• A potential soft landing spot for Gophers basketball assistant coach Saul Smith after the season: working as an associate head coach under his brother, G.G. Smith. That's if G.G. lands the Maryland-Baltimore job -- which is a definite possibility. G.G. is currently an assistant coach at Loyola in Maryland.

Go Gophers!!

This is one where I really hope Doogie is right and not just throwing mud at the wall. I am not a coach basher, but even I think some changes on the staff are needed. Saul's drinking problem cannot have helped matters over the last couple of years.

The mud he's throwing is assuming GG is going to be the head coach at UMBC. No particular reason to think so.

Getting a DWI and being an alcoholic are not synonymous. Did I miss something or are you just throwing garbage out there.

Saul needs to move on.

The more important nugget in there was the meeting with T.Denny Sanford. That could go a long ways towards getting the practice facility issue resolved.

I don't know Saul's particular strengths or ideas as a coach nor do I like the DWI.

However, one positive I can see to having him on staff is that he played for Tubby. He knows for the most part what he expects / wants from his players and can possibly relate well to new players playing for Tubby.

Just a theory though, maybe he is really as bad as they say.

Personally, even if it isn't him, I somewhat like the idea of a former player on staff to possibly serve as a liaison between coach and players and also as someone who can tell recruits what the coach is like to play for.

Does Tubby have the wrong son working for him?

I like the idea of any second generation coach going out on his own and gaining a different perspective.

What's the deal with Saul getting so much blame. What about all their other seemly low energy coaches including Tubby. Doggie seems obsessed with Saul . Did he stiff him on a bar tab? Whatever problems this team has, Saul has played a tiny part in it. It's like he is the easy whipping boy for the Doggies of the world. What great reporting. If that's all you got . Why bother?

keep doogies hot air coming he needs people to be dumb enough to think his fiction is somehow credible

FTB, I think you're being a bit hard on Doogie on this one. Of all of the local radio/TV reporters, he cites his sources more than most.

Go Gophers!!

I've seen both Saul and GG play in person. Tubby coached GG at Georgia and Saul at Kentucky. You can be sure, there wasn't a player on the court who played harder than either of these young men. They might not have been the most talented players (though IMO GG had more talent) but they didn't play soft or lack for effort. They didn't play stupidly. It was all out every minute they played. Saul is top 10 all time in assists and steals at UK, which is pretty good IMO.

I've seen Saul be the floor Coach at Tennessee Tech when Mike Sutton was in a wheel chair on the sidelines, he coaches with the same intensity he played so I doubt he's an issue. At UK, he was brutalized by the fans but never ever lost his cool and played harder than anyone on the floor. I doubt that has changed in his coaching career. Son of a great coach, good college player, national championship winner, 4 years of ncaa tourament experience as a player, a little bit of pro experience, pretty good make up for a college coach. Much better than anyone who is going to type in this thread.

How many players' recruitments has Saul handled? That's my biggest concern with him. Vince Taylor and Ron Jirsa seem to do all of the recruiting for the Gophers.

Go Gophers!!

He went to a random blog, copied their stuff whole sale, claimed it as his own, and then leaped to Saul leaving. Pure laziness, and wrong of course too.

You may not agree with everything he says, but one thing Doogie is not, is lazy.

This time he was. Google searches are so hard!

He saw a blurb on a blog, and then the assumptions began.

1. He assumed that the UMBC job was open. It wasn't.
2. He assumed GG would get the job, but he didn't.
3. He assumed Saul would leave for that job, but he didn't.

I guess you could working that hard to create a rumor isn't lazy, but it is lazy "journalism".

This is a guy that has plagiarized himself. He is not immune to laziness.

Very good post. Thank you. I have been so sick of listening to these guys since I moved here. Minnesota is a too great of state to have journalists like these JAs. We can only hope that ESPN would steal them like they stole Myron.

If ESPN steals Amelia away, then I will get pissed.

He also assumed Tubby would be hot after the Virginia Tech job last spring (and every other ACC job the last 5 years) because Donna wants out of her igloo and Blacksburg is only 3 hours from where she grew up 50 years ago. He assumptions about the Smith family have generally been a bit off.

I'm pretty sure Doogie just throws stuff out there to get a reaction from people. I'm also fairly certain that he loves to go on this website to read everyone bashing him.
