Doogie: "Les Miles absolutely would have had interest in Gophers job. Same w/ Fleck"

In his latest Scoops Podcast, Doogie reports that both Les Miles and PJ Fleck would have had interest in the Gopher coaching job, but Mark Coyle "never came close to firing Tracy Claeys."

Go Gophers!!

I'm sure guys like that always keep their options open and their agents take every phone call...

Just like the recruit who is interested in Minnesota until say Miami shows up...

Ultimately that doesn't mean much.

Also the existing complaints, offense was Les's problem too.

Of course Les Miles would've had interest. He's 63 years old and cannot afford to sit out a season. There are also very few Power 5 jobs open right now. He will not be considered at Oregon or a top 25 program.

Considering that Coyle told Claeys a month ago he would be back and the belief he's not making any changes until the facilities are done, sounds believable.

What do you mean by "can't afford"?

Les has a natty, he could go be a Alabama consultant for a bit if he wanted and he would still be in demand.

I guess I would believe we had a shot at Fleck but Les? someone drank way too much before they wrote that article.

Of course they would have had interest. Doesn't mean they would have been a serious candidate or that the U would be willing to pay enough to get either of them to come here but Miles is unemployed and Fleck is in the MAC.

Les did an interview a bit ago where he talked about being excited to go some place that is committed to winning national championships. Now that could just be rah rah stuff... but I interpreted it to mean that folks looking for a cheap coach / not willing to pay top dollar for staff and etc need not apply.

It's a young man's game. If Les sits out 2017 he would be 65 years old at the end of the 2018 season. He needs to get a job this year or he risks his career ending (barring a Frank Solich/Ohio type drop down in levels).

Doogie, it's always the same song and dance.

He makes bold statements from his sources only when it's at a point where they can never be put the test.

Doogie has ZERO sources. It's actually kind of a fun game. Pay attention to local sports and check out Doogie's insights (Timberwolves coaching search, drafts, Gopher basketball searching, etc.). His lack of sources will become abundantly clear.

You know you suck when a guy named Meatsauce can out scoop you for stories

I interpret that to mean, I don't want to have to build a program, I want to go to a helmet school that recruits itself and wants a wacky CEO type coach. Honestly, why on earth would anyone think Les Miles would be a good fit for us? "won a natty" is not nearly enough. Fleck I can definitely see.

Yeah I agree, he wants something established too.
