Go Gophers!!

And the University of Minnesota PC BS will continue on and on and on............................ They certainly would't want to offend anyone.

Some day down the road they will actually hire an AD.

Seriously this is BS. There is absolutely NO reason to wait practically a full year to fill this position. If there is I'd love to hear it.

Maybe replacing a MegaTongue is proving rather difficult.

I just think that Kaler and all the powers-that-be at the U are gun-shy. There is going to be a lot of scrutiny on this hiring process, and if they screw it up, there will be (or at least should be) consequences.

So, they are trying to be as careful as possible, and make sure their behinds are covered as much as possible. This is going to be a long drawn-out process. Some people may complain that it's taking too long, but that is probably safer than going too fast and making a bad choice. it's like a team with the lead trying to run out the clock. If they wind up with a "win," nobody is going to remember how long it took to get there.

This. The reason there was a University "Search Committee" was to satisfy the donors and M Club guys who demanded to be part of the decision making process. Guess to some people that seems a little "P.C." of them. Seems more like covering their posterior to me too.

Well, if you feel that the department is in good hands with Beth, and you have no pressing problems that need immediate attention, then what is the rush. If they are planning to hire Beth anyway, why not give her some more time to prove she can handle the position.

As much as people want to whine about it, fund raising is about the only immediate need that they have right now. Football is stable for another couple years at least. Basketball has such a large buyout and they obviously want to give Pitino another year so that is stable. Hockey is under performing, but there is a lot of push back against removing a 5 time conference champion coach so that can wait another year. All the other programs are in good shape so there is no rush to hire an AD.

Kaler's job is on the line with this AD hire and he is taking his time and making sure he gets as much buy-in as he can. My guess is that he wants to hire Beth and the more time he gives her running the department the better it looks. And if the search committee picks her, then no one can say they make a quick decision and just settled on her.

Darren Wolfson: "President Kaler, Who is on the search committee"
Kaler: "You sure as hell aren't."
Wolfson: "Okay, I'll tweet that out"

Who cares how long it takes, who is on the committee, or if the new AD has experience - as long as the new hire is from MN all will be good.

Why would his job be on the line? U of M admin. hasn't cared about athletics for 45 years. What has changed?

Yeah unless he hires a buddy and they run off with some money. University President's job should not be on the line for an AD hire... his job is a lot of things, that isn't that big a part.

Yep, athletics has a $120 million share of a $3.5+ billion operation.

Maybe. My guess is that the U's bylaws state that a search committee is a part of the hiring process. And, the search committee can only recommend to the president. The Pres can do what he wants. That could create some resistance, but that's why he gets the big bucks. The candidates typically meet with the president separate from the committee and that meeting can be important. I was just on such a committee and when the candidate met with the administrator he made demands that we did not know about (a ridiculous salary and a full time job for his wife among others). So the process will be followed. I agree that it is too long and the results are not always as desired.

Well, like most of Gopher Hole, I haven't heard from Kaler, so I am sure I am still in the running. ;)

I called and told him I wasn't interested. Thought I would be more polite than the rest of you.

I hope these notifications started with anyone who supported the Teague or Brewster hire.

I got a call.....dammit

I'm not eligible for this committee because I'm already on the committee to decide who's on the 10 person search committee.

Oy Vey

When it comes to Gopher Football, this gif is applicable to so many things; to Matt Limegrover's goal line play selection, Jerry Kill's two minute drill, Eric Kaler's sense of urgency, Mega Tongue's pick-up technique, fundraising, beer lines

As far as taking a year goes, the first part was to get past the review of the athletic dept discrimination complaints. Hiring an Ad while that was going on was not going to happen. No good candidate would take the job until they knew the resolution of that review. I think Kaler is a little gun shy, and if I were him I might be as well. The problem with hiring people from outside is that you really do not know their work, the people skills, the ability to figure out how to get things done in an organization, a bunch of stuff that determine whether someone is a success or failure in a job, especaily in a complex organization like a B1G university.
As far as support for athletics goes, Kaler has been the most supportive in the 50 years I have watched Goph football and it is not close. He was smart enough to have an open door for Kill because it was apparent he and Teague did not get a long.
His problem is his search team checked all of the boxes, but they really did not understand who they were hiring on a personal basis, and I am not talking just about babes and booze. He was not that likable, not really a people person who wanted to spend time developing relationships with people he did not know, and did not listen all that well to people he was meeting. Most of the people around him are much better with people, including Beth Goetz, than he was. They need a person with JKs personality and drive for success in this job. I am not advocating he be the choice, but somebody like him is what they need.

Both you and Bacon are right, of course, the University is much more than athletics.

At the same time, I would argue that the athletic department has a disproportionally large impact on the public perception of the University, and ineptitude or worse in that department is harmful to the University as a whole.

Our athletic department does not need to be first class for the University to be a great institution, but if it continues to be an embarrassment, then it may be time to question Kaler's fitness for his role.

Obama for AD. As Barreiro tweeted. "Teague resigns Aug. 7, 2015. Scalia dies Feb. 13, 2016. Superintendent Johnson resigns Dec. 16, 2014."
