I know some have assumed that Kirkwood would get medical redshirt status for the 2010 season, but does anyone know for sure? I believe he should have qualified.

Yep, from my understanding Kirkwood will be a Freshman next season.

It's almost the best of both worlds that he was able to get a taste of what college football is like and yet he didn't lose any eligibility.

I thought you had to exhaust your eligibility and then apply for a medical redshirt.

Whatever the case, this is good news. Kirkwood's got some talent. So the more eligibility he has to work with, the better for the Gophers.

Nope, that is when you are applying for your 6th year of eligibility, but even with that they usually let you know sooner rather than later (like they will say, "it looks like you are a strong a candidate for a 6th season").

That is a different scenario than a medical RS. A medical RS essentially lets you use your RS season on a season when you played a bit at the begining and got hurt. So, you really can't use your medical RS season if you've already used your RS. It simply switches last season to RS despite the fact that he played a little bit at the beginging. Kirkwood doesn't still have a "traditional" RS.
