Judge forces US Capitol rioter to unlock laptop seized by FBI

A federal judge forced a US Capitol rioter to unlock his laptop Wednesday after prosecutors argued that it likely contained footage of the January 6 insurrection from his helmet-worn camera. The judge granted the Justice Department's request to place Capitol riot defendant Guy Reffitt in front of his laptop so they could use facial recognition to unlock the device. The maneuver happened after the hearing ended and Reffitt's lawyer confirmed to CNN that the laptop was unlocked.

Investigators seized the laptop and other devices earlier this year pursuant to a search warrant. Reffitt has been in jail since his arrest in January. His case received national attention after his son spoke publicly about how Reffitt had threatened to kill family members if they turned him into the FBI. The case became an example of how former President Donald Trump's lies tore some families apart -- Reffitt's son and daughter testified against him in court or before the grand jury.

He pleaded not guilty to five federal crimes, including bringing a handgun to the Capitol grounds during the insurrection and obstructing justice by allegedly threatening his family. The felony gun charge was added last month, and undercuts false claims from Trump and prominent Republican lawmakers that the rioters weren't armed and that they had "no guns whatsoever."

US Capitol rioter who captured Babbitt's death on video is the 20th person to plead guilty in insurrection

A Capitol rioter who captured Ashli Babbitt's death on video became the 20th person to plead guilty for his involvement in the deadly January 6 insurrection. Andrew Bennett of Maryland pleaded guilty Thursday in DC District Court to illegally demonstrating inside the US Capitol. He got the same deal as other nonviolent rioters pleading to a single misdemeanor -- including paying $500 in restitution for damage to the Capitol building and giving investigators access to his social media data.

Bennett was wearing a hat with a Proud Boys motto on it during the riot, prosecutors say. However, there is no indication that Bennett marched with the Proud Boys to the Capitol, or was with them when they overpowered the police line, or that he entered the building with any members of the far-right group.

Investigators received a tip the day of the riot claiming that Bennett had been livestreaming video on Facebook from inside the Capitol. In the videos, according to court filings, Bennett yells "No destruction!" at other rioters kicking a door inside the building. But later, prosecutors say, Bennett taped himself chanting "Break it down!" near a door located in the Speaker's Lobby, where Babbitt was shot. A gunshot can be heard on the video.

According to court records, Bennett posted on Facebook days before the riot, "You better be ready chaos is coming," and "#FIGHTBACK for Lin Wood and his family!," referring to the conspiracy-theorist lawyer who was involved in longshot legal efforts to overturn the election.

Bumble match turns in January 6 suspect who allegedly whipped police

Prosecutors say Andrew Taake of Texas used the dating app Bumble while in Washington on January 6. The match asked if he was near the Capitol and he said he was there "from the very beginning." He sent several selfies and claimed that he spent 30 minutes in the building.

Within days, the match turned him in to the FBI, prosecutors said Friday in new court filings.
Screenshots of their Bumble chat show that Taake told the match he was "peacefully standing there" at the Capitol. But prosecutors say he was involved in two violent attacks against police who were defending the building. Footage from the front lines shows Taake using pepper spray against the police line and later striking police with a metal whip, according to court filings.

He has been charged with several federal crimes, including felony assault on a police officer, civil disorder and obstruction of congressional proceedings. He hasn't yet entered a plea.
He's now the second known Capitol defendant who was arrested because of online dating gone awry. A man from New York was charged in April after a Bumble match turned him in. Taake's dating profile said he's the owner of a power washing company in Houston, according to one of the screenshots.

A metal whip used on police eh? "But they didn't have any weapons."

Ex-cop who stormed US Capitol is jailed after buying 37 guns and posting that 'violence' is better than 'peaceful protest'

A Virginia police officer who was fired after storming the US Capitol was jailed Wednesday by a federal judge because he ordered a large stockpile of guns and ammunition after his January arrest, and posted online in support of future political violence.

Thomas Robertson, a retired Army Reservist who later worked for the Rocky Mount Police Department, was one of the first rioters charged by the Justice Department. He was released in January but re-arrested this month after investigators said they found a rifle and bomb-making material in his home, and also learned that he recently bought another 37 guns on the Internet. The decision from Judge Christopher Cooper means Robertson will stay behind bars until his case is resolved, which could take months or even drag into 2022.

Wow. Breaking news: apparently, being locked up in jail can be a rather unpleasant experience. That's shocking. Who knew?

Over 2 billion dollars of damage from george floyd riots. Police treated so badly many retired early or found other employment. Public officials were harrassed at their homes. Part of Seattle was declared an autonomous zone. The dems/media largely refused to condemn the mayhem but rather used it to advance their agenda that america is racist. Now, in contrast to 5 years ago, all lib ghers say that kneeling before our flag is just as meaningful as respecting it - this lib extremism was greatly enhanced by the gf riots.

By contrast, jan 6 was over in a few hours and business resumed that evening. Right media and repubs condemned it. Wouldnt even have happened if pelosi had added extra security as requested.

I know you cant respond to this question as it damages your premise. But if honest you do realize the gf riots were much more consequential than jan 6, correct?

A coordinated attempt to violently overturn an election is about the most damaging thing imaginable to our system of government.

The GF riots were terrible, but no threat to our existence as a nation.

What Trump and assholes like you attempted is orders of magnitude more of a threat to my liberty.

Fuck you.

So, if Walz, Frey and the Minneapolis police had done differently, a lot of damage could have been prevented. Are the rioters Who burned the police station off the hook?
I realize this isn’t your argument, but I continue to find blaming Pelosi a false flag. If she had cracked down, the blowback would be she was being partisan against the MAGAs.

I am definitely not letting the jan 6 rioters off the hook. Perhaps if pelosi was concerned about blowback she could have asked repub leaders for their input.

....but I continue to find blaming Pelosi a false flag. If she had cracked down, the blowback would be she was being partisan against the MAGAs.

Even some folks who are pushing back on the Pelosi theory are mistakenly buying into the premise that the Speaker has responsible for security. “No one person oversees USCP -- the oversight apparatus includes representation from the Architect of the Capitol, the House and Senate Sergeants at Arms, as well as committees from both Houses of Congress,” Bee Barnett, director of communications and programs for the U.S. Capitol Historical Society, said in an email.

What confuses me about the tours/they were let in/just protesters -- why did the Freedom Caucus all run for the basement? Oh yeah, it was Antifa. Its a great debate strategy when -- all these things are true: they were invited in, it looked like a tour, they were Antifa, they egged on by the FBI, they are patriots held unlawfully, no weapons, Pelosi's fault. When all those contradictions are true, you can simply pull out the one that you need when you need it.

Maybe the Capitol Police each only had one bullet and that in a buttoned front shirt pocket they couldn't get at, Barney Fife style.

Which if those aimed to overturn our system of elections?

This isn't even debatable.

There was no danger of that. Repubs and right media immediately condemned the rioters and was business as usual within a couple of hours.

Contrast that to burning cities, quitting police, autonomous zone, harassing public officials at their residences, using the riots to promote a message america is racist which led to promotion of crt, refusal by dems and media to condemn the mayhem.

Really interesting the contrast to how repubs and right media versus how dems and media reacted to these outrages.

The Republicans did condemn 1/6 right away. Since then, the message has become:
1. Other riots were bigger!
2. Nancy wasn’t prepared!
3. It’s all staged, they let them in!
4. The crowd was ginned up by FBI plants!
5. Let’s se the other 14 k hours of videotape!
6. These guys are crying!
7. Did you know jail sucks? Who knew?
If you want to see your side as gallant, go ahead. The whitewash attempt is in full force, ask yourself why.

All of that may or may not be true. In any case, no excuse for what happened. It was awful.

They are all true. And it was easily the most dangerous threat to our democracy in my lifetime. It thankfully wasn't a whole lot worse that day, but the entire idea was despicable and it lives on in threats throughout the country and in the minds of morons like @TraitorShillGA1 and thousands of people in high ranking positions in this country. The entire movement needs to miserably fail or we are in serious trouble.

So u really think there are ghers who wish those rioters were somehow successful? That there are conservative leaders who wish those rioters were successful?
