...among the pantheon of great Gopherhole stories?

Among the greatest Gopherhole yarns, I would include:

Detlef and the Essenhaus Stein
ChinaGopher and the Chairleg in the Eye Socket
The Death and resurrection of Kelly Leeks

I daresay, however, that none of the threads involving these stories got 17,000 hits!!!!

I say a hearty cheers is in order to one Mr. Dpodoll68.

It will be talked about for years. Solid effort from all involved. And to think, it started with a simple picture of the Gophersports.com homepage.

GopherHole.com: Where Amazing Happens.

If I remember correctly, he was nominated for hole of the year in 2009. (just kidding, I think I like the guy).

I voted yes, but doesn't "yarn" imply that it isn't true? The old standby is "pics or it didn't happen" and he has given us pics and video.

Yes. Without question.

The last thing DPO needs is adulation from us, mind you. It's possible the Interwebz may no longer be large enough to contain his ego. Nevertheless, he's earned my praise today.

I think this story may transcend truth.

It doesn't really matter if Detlef's stein was stolen; it has become a part of the fabric of Gopherhole.

If you followed the thread post by post it was easily one of if not the best of all time.

Assists to Gopher07 and the guy that found the flight

please God....let there be a mention of the Philly flight in the paper tomorrow!

I voted yes without hesitation, but for me it was the thread leading up to it as much as him actually going to the airport. That was a big ol' cherry on top. Most entertaining thread ever, glad I was a part of it!

I vote for the death and resurrection of Kelly Leeks. That is my #1. Now where is the Hungry Sailor to make my day complete?

I personally will never view dpodoll in the same light again, but in a different, awesomer light.

Whoa these percentages look a lot like the Strib's Mike Leach poll. Is this a sign?

For those who don't know - DP is one of my good friends. While he may rub some the wrong way sometimes with his corrections of grammatical mistakes or persistance in pointing out a flawed argument, the man bleeds maroon and gold (with a slight tinge of purple). Furthermore, he is not one to ever pull an internet stunt by faking everyone into thinking he was going to go up to see the flight.

Even if your mission was fueled by a deep-rooted man crush on Al Golden, I salute you DP!

The pics and video polished that bad boy off. I vote yes.

In order to maintain some semblence of perspective I'm going to stop short of calling his efforts heroic, but the were definitely awesome and I've never been happier to be a member of this crazy little community.

Stalking? More like investigative journalism. There was an attempt to figure out were Maturi had gone, and an attempt to confirm that hypothesis.

I know, but it makes for a more fun storyline to use the word stalking. That's my own little bit of journalism. :)

The fact that I was even able to get as close to the plane as I did was a minor miracle.

My wife took flying classes through HS and college, and actually gained her instrument rating, so she was helpful in this due to her basic knowledge of ANE's layout. There are two sets of hangars at ANE (east and west), and based on her guess at the likelihood of where the coterie would disembark, I camped out on the west side. When I saw the plane land, I paid attention to where it was going, and it looked to be taxiing toward the east hangars. I frantically attempted to get over to the east terminals, but I would have had to actually go back out onto county roads, which wouldn't have left me enough time. Just when I had given up hope, I drove back past the FBO and unexpectedly saw the airplane pull up to the entrance. I found a good vantage point and got the video of the steps going down and the passengers getting out (I could see them much better than the video would indicate). After I confirmed that it was not the cargo we were all hoping for, I moved over to the other side of the building so that I could get a close-up shot of the tail number. I was hoping that my eyes deceived me and that these really were Maturi and our new coach. I parked in an inconspicuous spot, expecting (yearning?) to see a limo, or at least a U of M vehicle, pull up to receive the travelers. Alas, they left separately in typical middle-class transportation, and we are all left wanting...

Epic....

Oh it's classic.

I always loved the "Broadway quality shows in Des Moines" bit too.

If indeed this were Maturi and Golden not only would this video have been on every news station in town but it would live in infamy.

Are you sure that Maturi/Golden didn't swap clothes with the pilots? Joel is a clever one.

Considering all of the nonsense that people are putting up on Twitter (Gruden has NOT become Miami's coach, there have been seven "finalists" for the Gophers job who the same sites then said were not finalists, etc.), this was really funny.

Whereas others were going by pure speculation, DP went to the damn airport and saw who got off the plane like an actual reporter. That's great hustle.

(Meanwhile, there will be 50 posts on Twitter by sites like "Football Rumor Mill Dot Com" that use second, third and fourth-hand sources to speculate in ways that haven't turned out true at all by the end of this post.)

Hat tip to DP.

It shows what's wrong with the world when merely passing along rumors from unnamed sources is considered journalism, while investigation, actually checking things out, is not.
