Does Big 10 + 2 = 9 in conference games?

They should already do that and man-up like the Pac-10.

Everyone thinks it should. 99% chance that it will not happen.

I agree

and the other non--conf games are conference challenge games - just like in hoops - each year the big ten matches up with two other conferences and we play them top to bottom - out first place against their first place and on down the line - one conf challenge game is home the other is away. If you finish at the bottom of the conf and there is no match up for you then you are free to schedule something else - like Montana!!

It means a guaranteed loss for half the teams in the conference thus reducing the chances of multiple BCS teams. You don't give up that type of revenue.

Yeah, it probably does mean a nine game conference schedule. Many Big Ten schools are on record, even some who regularly sellout all games, as saying that they are tired of having to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy a Non-Conference game. The stories below are from 2008. The Des Moines Register story is particularly enlightening. Take a look at the money involved and you'll see why schools are willing to maybe take on another loss to stop the bleeding.

games

A twelve team league would have two six team divisions. Each team plays five games in its own division plus alternating three per year in the other division which totals eight. Thus you play every team at least every two years. That leaves four OOC games one of which could be conference challenge team like with the SEC. With room for three patsys on the schedule it wouldn't be too hard to go 8-3 or better for a decent bowl game.

It will stay at 8 conference games. Some schools may complain, but others have traditional NC rivalries (Notre Dame). Plus it allows padding of the schedule and occasional showcase games. To play each other in more than 8 game would only mean beating each other up more (record wise) and appearing to be weaker nationally.

I'm with GO4FAN - 2 six team divisions are the way to go. 5 division games, +3 cross-division games. I'm not that interested in going to 9 conference games, and the Pac-10's recent bowl performance indicates to me that its not really making them that much tougher of a conference. If the 12th in is indeed Pitt, then I'd want an East and West divsion, split as such:

East:
Michigan
Michigan State
Penn State
Pitt
Ohio State
Indiana

West:
Minnesota
Illinois
Northwestern
Iowa
Purdue
Wisconsin

This would keep the primary rivalries intact within the division, (Purdue and IU the exception). Conference east-west title game could be rotated thru neutral sites like Ford Field, Soldier Field, Lucas Oil Stadium, etc. Would love to see this materialize...
