Thanks for posing the question. It's something I've been thinking about a bit.

Do you go for the guy for whom this could be a career upgrade, but most likely be last destination? Think someone in their 50s with an 8-year deal.

Or do you roll the dice and go with a younger guy and try to sell them on the fact if they turn around the program it will be "their" program ala Paterno at Penn State? The problem with a younger coach, of course, is that it could serve as a stepping-stone.

I wouldn't put age in the quandary department, but the administration needs to be cognizant that a difference in age could present challenges down the road a piece.

Kind of what I was thinking. If all credentials are equal I would prefer a younger up and comer. If they get the program to a higher level and leave then it might be a more attractive job.

Only to the extent the person has done a lot more, and seen a lot more situations, and has actually learned from them. As Lou Holtz was saying the other night in reference to Randy Shannon, "he got his first head coaching job at too high a level where the mistakes were magnified". Holtz said he made all kinds of mistakes his first few years at William and Mary (his first head coaching job), but he was lucky because no one cared.
He is right that in most carrers it is true.
